Metropolitan College 2030 Strategic Plan
Career-changing. Life-changing. Game-changing.
The world of work is changing. Technology-driven innovation—computing, global networks, automation, data science, artificial intelligence, cyber-physical systems—transforms established industries and creates new ones at an unprecedented pace. In this fluid environment, the continual renewal of knowledge and skills is vital for the well-being of the individual, the economy, and society. The individual may have to sustain a professional career that spans over fifty years. The economy and society rely on an educated workforce with the capabilities and skills to further progress and prosperity.
This poses a strategic challenge to academia—namely, to continually design and deliver educational programs with curricula that match industry innovation, in a range of formats (e.g., degrees, certificates, micro-masters’) that are both affordable and accessible in time and space. And in meeting the scope of this challenge, we see continuing education moving into the mainstream, the typically siloed roles of extension and traditional schools merging.
Boston University’s Metropolitan College (MET) was among the first to recognize and respond to these trends. MET became a leader in professional part-time and online teaching and learning by developing programs in growth areas and introducing new modalities. This 2030 MET Strategic Plan charts our path through the disrupted educational landscape of the 21st century as the College reinforces its position at the vanguard of education.
We see this plan as a living document that outlines our vision for the future and reflects the measure of our progress. As we evaluate the results of our work, we will adapt existing initiatives and develop new ones in response to changing needs, new opportunities, and the latest research insights.
As we look forward, we focus on our ability to be game-changing in the field of continuing education. See what lies ahead at Metropolitan College. We think you will be very excited—as we are.
