The manipulation of citizens’ fears in order to justify discrimination, nationalism, or policies that favor specific religious, ethnic, or economic interest groups can further polarize societies and threatens to undermine personal freedoms and the rule of law. Political power is given through the will of the people and democratic societies must not fall prey to political actors seeking advantage by portraying themselves as the sole voice speaking for the electorate.
