Sarkawt Shamsulddin is a nonresident fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Middle East Programs and was a member of the Iraqi Parliament from 2018 to 2021. He is also president and co-founder of the US Iraq Advisory Group. When he was elected in 2018, he became the youngest Iraqi member of parliament at the age of thirty-four. Shamsulddin was deputy chairman of the Civil Society Committee and a member of the Iraq-US Friendship Committee. In parliament, he worked on anti-corruption legislation that held multiple individuals accountable. Shamsulddin is the co-founder of the New Generation Movement, a new political party that promotes young leaders.
Before becoming a member of parliament, Shamsulddin was the Washington Bureau Chief for Nalia Radio and Television. He also worked with the US embassy from 2009 to 2013 before coming to the United States, where he received a number of awards from the US State Department. Shamsulddin writes and speaks on political and security development in Iraq, Kurdish regions, and the greater Middle East.
Shamsulddin is a graduate of Virginia Tech School of Public Policy.
