Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Game History
The show aired from September 1998 to February 2014, an impressive 16-year run. It was created by three British TV executives—David Briggs, Mike Whitehill, and Steven Knight—and it follows a simple format. Contestants answer a series of multiple-choice questions with increasing difficulty to win cash prizes, ranging from £100 to £1,000,000.
Approximately 160 countries adopted their own versions of the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? game. At first, subsequent versions were required to closely resemble the UK original, especially in terms of the host’s attire, music, and set design. However, several of these rules have been relaxed as the game continued to evolve in international settings.
