Shazam Music Recognition is designed to protect your privacy.
-
- Your Shazam Music Recognition requests will be associated with a random, device-generated identifier. This random identifier is not linked to your Apple Account.
- If you are signed in to your Apple Account and have two-factor authentication enabled, Shazam Music Recognition will use iCloud to sync your recognized Shazam Music Recognition requests across your devices.
- We collect information about your Shazam Music Recognition activity, such as the songs you identify using the service, to display the list of your requests in your Shazam Music Recognition History.
Protecting the privacy and security of your information is a priority for everyone at Apple. We work hard to collect only the data we need to make your experience better, and when we do collect data we believe it’s important for you to know what we’re collecting and why we need it, so you can make informed choices.
Using Shazam Music Recognition
You can use the Shazam Music Recognition app on Apple Watch to identify a song that is playing. Shazam Music Recognition sends certain data about your song request, including a unique audio fingerprint for each song, to Apple to process and help recognize your Shazam Music Recognition request. By default, Shazam Music Recognition requests are associated with a random, device-generated identifier that is not linked to your Apple Account.
When you are signed in to your Apple Account and have two-factor authentication enabled, Shazam Music Recognition will use iCloud to save your recognized Shazam Music Recognition requests in iCloud where it is encrypted while in transit and at rest. You can disable iCloud syncing from your iOS or iPadOS device by going to Settings > [your name] > iCloud and tapping to turn off Shazam Music Recognition. When you disable iCloud syncing for Shazam Music Recognition, your Shazam Music Recognition requests saved to iCloud will remain in your Apple Account, but new requests will not be added from Shazam Music Recognition. You can manage your Shazam Music Recognition history by going to the History tab in the app.
You can also use Shazam Music Recognition to identify songs from Control Center, Siri, and other features on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Learn more about how to add and use Shazam Music Recognition in Control Center, Siri, and more at support.apple.com/118570.
Information Collected About You
We collect data about which songs you identify in Shazam Music Recognition to display them in your Shazam Music Recognition History. We may also collect certain identifiers (such as IP address) to help us detect fraud or misuse of the service. You may choose to provide Shazam Music Recognition with access to your device’s location while you are using the app. We use location data to show you where you recognized a song and to improve the quality of the service. You can disable Location Services for Shazam Music Recognition at any time on your iPhone by going to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, and setting location access for Shazam Music Recognition to Never.
We may use deidentified and aggregate information, such as the songs identified using Shazam Music Recognition and the approximate location of each Shazam Music Recognition request, to support related Apple products and services, including to add recognized requests to Apple Music and Shazam charts of trending songs.
Apple Music
Apple Music is automatically linked to Shazam Music Recognition while you have an Apple Music subscription. Information about your Apple Music account is used by Shazam Music Recognition to provide features such as allowing you to add songs you identified using Shazam Music Recognition to your Apple Music playlists. Shazam Music Recognition may also personalize recommendations in the Shazam Music Recognition app based on whether you are subscribed. You can also choose to open a recognized Shazam Music Recognition request in any compatible third-party music streaming service.
Apple Watch Music Detection
You can choose to enable the Music Detection feature on Apple Watch to allow your Watch to use the microphone to automatically detect when music is playing in your surrounding environment. If Music Detection is enabled, your Apple Watch will notify you when it detects that music is playing and you can choose to use the Shazam Music Recognition feature to recognize the song playing. Music Detection operates entirely on device and your Apple Watch does not record or save any audio when listening to detect if music is playing. You can disable Music Detection at any time on your Apple Watch by going to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and turning off Music Detection.

We share deidentified and aggregate information, such as the songs identified using Shazam Music Recognition and the approximate location of each Shazam Music Recognition request, with our partners, including music labels and artists.
