Are you new to your community — or maybe just looking for ways to get more involved? Why not check out an AARP chapter near you!
There are more than 800 of these independently incorporated entities across the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, and they can be a great way to meet new people, give back and have fun!
Chapters meet monthly for most of the year, and each one has its own personality and focus. Chapter activities can include meals, cultural outings and trips, and for many, community service is a major priority.
Here is a small sampling of the ways chapters serve their communities:
• During a recent food drive, AARP chapters and Virginia Retired Teachers Association units across Virginia collected more than 15,000 pounds of food for families struggling with hunger in the state.
• The Land O’ Lakes chapter in Florida was honored for supporting AARP’s state and national goals as well as taking part in more than 30 community service projects in a single year.
• Other chapters dedicate time to beautify parks, run clothing drives, visit nursing homes, provide community scholarships and much more.
• A National Chapter Advisory Team with regional volunteer liaisons was established to help chapters share best practices and learn from one another, to enhance the experience of members and the benefit to communities.
