Dark glamour is back, and celebrities are flocking to the style trend like moths to a gothic flame. The trend, characterized by its blend of brutalism and sensuality, often features asymmetric volumes and neutral tones, with rare accents of color.
Even before it was officially fall, dark glamour style appeared on various red carpets and events over the past few months — like Taylor Swift’s dark glamour-influenced look for the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers game at the beginning of November.
The trend also emerged at the 2024 Met Gala, thanks to Emma Chamberlain, and at various film premieres and fashion shows. Laura Dern recently embraced this aesthetic in a sheer black gown at the 2024 LACMA Art+Film Gala.
Rooted in history, dark glamour draws inspiration from the Victorian era, when subdued styles and dramatic details were highly fashionable. Gothic culture, influenced by literature and icons like Horace Walpole, further embraced this trend. It evolved with influences like Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” and modern punk iterations featuring plenty of safety pins.
Today, the style blends gothic and Victorian aesthetics, combining dramatic silhouettes and embroidery with dark color palettes for a contemporary style statement.
