Welcome to WAM’s Girls on the Mic Youth Program

Empowering the Next Generation of Sound

Welcome to WAM’s Girls on the Mic (GOTM) program, a groundbreaking after-school training and mentoring initiative serving public schools in Oakland and San Francisco. We offer weekly audio training classes to girls and gender-expansive youth ages 11-18 from under-resourced communities.

We provide free creative technology and digital media production training, covering a diverse range of topics, including music production, coding, synthesizers, songwriting, podcast production, and more!

“We’re so fortunate to have these amazing teachers come for free and work with our students, who get to see people like them moving through these creative fields.”- Mackenzie, GMS science teacher, and club faculty advisor.

Whether club members are looking to sound and music as a career, a hobby, or just exploring, all agreed Girls on the Mic had given them something valuable in any circumstance: confidence. – Gateway Public School, GOTM Partner

Who are the classes for?
We partner with schools and after-school programs in SFUSD to offer free audio classes to girls and gender-expansive students ages 11-18.

“I used to be quiet when it was time to share out because I was worried about people judging me, but when I’m here, I never feel like I’m being judged. And if I can share music in front of people, I can share anything. – GOTM Student, Grade 8”

When are the classes?
Classes take place Tuesday – Friday 1-2x/week at partner sites. See dates below.

  • Spring Session: February 12 – May 16, 2024
  • Summer Session: June 10 – July 26, 2024
  • Fall Session: September 3rd-December 13th 2024

Girls on the Mic is a program of Women’s Audio Mission- a non-profit organization that uses music and media to connect middle and high school girls and gender-expansive youth to STEAM studies. You don’t have to identify as a girl to participate — all identities are welcome! That said, we ask all students interested to show up open to learning and understanding why we hold this particular affinity space.

LEARN HOW TO:

  • Produce Beats
  • Record Podcasts
  • DJ and Sample
  • Produce Sound for Film
  • Pursue a Career in the Audio Industry
  • and so much more!
