At our last meeting of @soroptimistgbi we welcomed another remarkable woman working in a male dominated role in the Merchant Navy. Fran Collins, CEO of @redfunnelferry is a master mariner, a highly respected position due to the exceptional training in the UK. She told members that 95% of UK’s goods and services are transported by the Merchant Navy. When Fran started her training there were 3 women and 40 men. Interestingly of these the 3 women and only 9 men qualified. Fran spoke about the challenges of long stretches at sea, often being the only woman on board and discrimination. Fran has introduced more flexible working to attract more women but feels there is still more to be done. #soroptimist #soroptimistinternational #redfunnel #redfunnelferry #dorsetlife #pooledorset

President of @soroptimistgbi Ruth Healey has written to our Prime Minister Sir Keith Starmer regarding the Government’s promise to halve violence against women and girls in the next decade. Offences have grown by 37% in the past 5 years and it’s estimated to affect 2 million women a year, that’s 1 in every 12 women. @soroptimistglobal is asking for a cross party strategic review and for a Minister for Women to be appointed with full cabinet portfolio. soroptimistpoole SI Poole Purbeck and District are sending huge congratulations to Poole’s @bryony_page 🥇 On Friday Bryony won GB’s first trampoline Olympic gold medal, having already achieved silver and bronze before. 33 year old Bryony lives and trains in Poole at the Poole gymnastics and trampolining club and is already a two-time individual world champion. Today is International Women in Engineering Day which aims to celebrate women working in engineering, to change perceptions of the industry and to inspire more girls to consider a career in the field. It was founded by Dawn Bonfield MBE, former Chief executive of the Women’s Engineering Society. This fits perfectly with the Soroptimists of Poole, Purbeck & district who have chosen this year to celebrate women in “ non traditional “ careers. Currently only 9% of the UKs engineering workforce is female. In 2016 Dawn was given an MBE for her “ services to the promotion of diversity in engineering “. She lobbies for inclusivity in engineering and stresses that it is not the dirty industry that people think. Not only is the UK suffering from a skills shortage in engineering but we are lagging behind the rest of Europe, as the country with the lowest percentage of engineering professionals. Hopefully role models like Dawn will inspire more girls to choose STEM subjects and influence the technologies of the future. #engineering #internationalwomeninengineeringday #dawnbonfield #womenequality #womenequalityday
