How do you optimise operations to achieve a robust private credit strategy? That was the question in a recent Clear Path Analysis webinar (sponsored by Arcesium) where several industry experts gave their views on the rapid increase in interest in private assets. The discussion explored how managers can ensure that their teams are optimised to manage asset inflow and growth objectives. “When considering going into the market, it is about starting with an inward assessment of the manager’s resources, so, if I put myself in your shoes, am I looking at an in-house solution where I build everything internally or would I like to start with an outsource model,” said Gavin Lau, Managing Director, Head of Private Credit Fund Management, Macquarie Asset Management, in the discussion. “The way that we look at the approach is that investor requirements drive the vehicle structure, which drives what the supporting operating model is,” said Andy Murray, Product Management, Oaktree Capital Management, L.P.. #investmentoperations #assetmanagement #fundoperator #privatecredit #investmentstrategy #operationsstrategy Read more of their thoughts on the operational strategy you need and what the experienced advice they offer is here 👇

What are the AI washing risks for fund operators? The risks of AI washing are becoming more apparent, more legislation and regulation is coming to fruition – so what will it mean? A new report from the consultants EY specified how companies could be putting themselves in problematic situations to regulators, customers, and shareholders if they exaggerate their prowess with artificial intelligence whether inadvertently or not. The report broke down the issue into two sections. #AIwishing — where management overstates its use of AI because it hopes or believes, but cannot verify, the way the organisation is using AI. #AIwashing – where the organisation deliberately makes inaccurate representations of how it’s using AI. Examples of AI washing include overselling of capabilities, vague terminology, and misleading marketing. The issue is gaining traction with many aspects of society as the number of companies claiming to be more technologically advanced than they are for market clout becomes an issue. #ai #artificialintelligence #operations #data #investmentoperations #regualtion #investmentregulation #assetmanagement Click here to read more 👇

A report from the all-party parliamentary group (APPG) on investment fraud and fairer financial services has called the UK’s regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) “incompetent at best, dishonest at worst”. The group called for extensive reforms to address serious shortcomings, which could affect fund operators as wrangling to sort the issues out could drag on and see more changes recommended. “Described as “hard-hitting” and widely described last week as the FCA being “incompetent at best, dishonest at worst”, it rings very true and feels accurate - given our post-pandemic experiences of dealing with the UK’s regulator on behalf of our clients,” said Neil Robson, Financial Markets and Funds partner at law firm Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP, in a comment on the findings. #regualtion #regulatoryoperations #investmentoperations #ukregulation #assetmanagement Read more here 👇

An academic report said that smaller asset managers can provide better alpha returns for clients with their investments and funds than larger companies due to the pressures of the industry. The factors were outlined by the Group of Boutique Asset Managers (GBAM) in a study and paper by Professor Andrew Clare, Professor of Asset Management at Bayes Business School (formerly Cass Business School). Clare’s work focused on the European asset management industry in 2020, which the report said also integrated findings of earlier research into US boutiques in 2015 by American financial services company AMG. #assetmanagement #boutiqueassetmanagement #alpha #investmentoperations #investmentstrategy #fundoperations Read more of the research here as well as GBAM's responses to it.

The Financial Reporting Council (FRC) has launched its consultation on the proposed updates to the UK Stewardship Code, which the organisation said would be focused on supporting economic growth and investment as well as “delivering increased transparency”. The FRC said it also wanted to streamline reporting requirements and reduce burdens for signatories and “ensure a clearer focus on the purpose of Stewardship and the outcomes that it delivers”. Industry reaction has been mixed. "It's interesting to see the FRC's definition of stewardship shift to "sustainable value" focused on clients and beneficiaries, dropping explicit references to "the environment and society”,” said Lindsey Stewart, CFA, Director of Investment Stewardship Research and Policy at Morningstar Sustainalytics. #stewardship #reporting #corporategovernance #fundoperator #investmentmanagement #regulation Read more here 👇
