PPE That Fits: Talking workwear from head to toe with OnSite Support Ltd PPE product guru David Nagy. In this video, we talk through a table full of PPE, with David sharing his top tips on what protection is available for everyone of all shapes and sizes. He touches on everything from Anti-Fog glasses to protective gloves, helmets, hearing protection, boots and clothing. We also talk through the importance of layering up and feeling comfortable onsite with flexible stretchy workwear from Leo Workwear. We finish with the benefits of composite boots from V12 and inner soles that help you with your posture, ensuring you are comfortable and safe onsite. For everyone out there thinking, "isn’t EDI done already?", or are worried EDI (Equity, Diversity & Inclusion) is going too far…   What did we learn at the annual Built Environment Diversity Data conference this week?   Over 55% of industry applicants come from an Ethnic Minority background, yet on average these candidates have to apply for 3.4x as many roles before getting hired in comparison to our white applicants (and only 5% of EM applicants didn't have Right to Work). Women are leaving the sector at a much higher rate before the age of 35, giving implications for the future pipeline of female senior leaders. We are still making slow progress with the increasing representation of disabled staff, with only 2.9% disabled employees in the industry compared to 15.2% in the working age population at large.   Yes, we are making progress in some places, but we still have a long way to go…   Loved some of the speakers we heard from: Aminah Shafiq at Severn Trent for creating the first PPE headscarf for Muslim women so they can feel safe whilst working on site. Alpa Kapasi for building in Inclusion into the design of site accommodation so everyone can come to work barrier-free. Liv Banfield, once again, for an amazing piece of data analysis and giving us an in-depth dive in the data.   Looking forward to the full report release! 🎤 Diversity Data Benchmarking Conference 🎤 Christina Donaghey , Social Impact Manager at VGC, attended the Diversity Data Benchmarking Conference earlier this week in Birmingham. The event featured insightful speakers discussing inclusive leadership, creating accessible workplaces, and diverse attraction and recruitment, along with key findings from the sector’s largest-ever diversity survey, which included data from 460,000 employees across 589 companies. Christina had the opportunity to present data on attraction and recruitment across the industry, as well as sharing VGC's innovative approaches to recruiting diverse talent on a panel where she was joined by Ripesh Patel MCIPS, Ashleigh Norris-Seal, and Natalie Jones, with Shelley Caton chairing. Yesterday Anthea Marris our Project Director attended the Diversity Data Benchmarking Conference 2024 hosted by the Fairness, Inclusion & Respect Programme. She met some fantastic people including the lovely Sara Barnes who has led a brilliant piece of work to design a series Neurodiversity Awareness training modules which are free for anyone to access via the Supply Chain Sustainability School (UK). The data shared provided insights across gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, age and religion. The full report will be published in February. One insight that stood out was the percentage of women in the sector is actually decreasing. The latest data (based on a sample size of 453,624 employees) is 24.6% of the workforce in the Built Environment are women (we know that the actual percentage is much lower as so many businesses do not share their data) versus the ONS data (2021 census: working age) of 50.8%. ⭐ 27.5% of applicants for roles in our sector are female ⭐ Whilst a staggering 45.7% of women leave the sector before the age of 34. We clearly all need to work smarter to create a more inclusive industry. The conversations that followed focused on the importance of purposeful leadership to drive change and the need to design inclusion into every process in every workplace.
