Supported by Equistone, Centre for Private Equity and MBO Research (CMBOR) recently released its half-year data, which evidenced a positive uplift in dealmaking activity across the North of England, with the value of North West-based deals growing by 90% compared to H1 2023. Deal volume in Yorkshire and the Humber also grew from seven buyouts in H1 2023, to 13 buyouts in H1 2024 – an 85% increase year on year. “It’s really encouraging to see buyout activity picking up in the first half of this year, which is indicative of a nationwide increase in activity. “We are expecting this increase in activity to continue into the rest of 2024, with a number of strong management teams looking for investment across the North. Despite their size, Jersey and Guernsey still pack a punch when it comes to funds jurisdictions. While private equity and venture capital dominate in the Channel Islands, real estate is also significant, with Jersey alone hosting 350 real estate funds managing US$68 billion in assets, according to Monterey Insights. So, why are these small islands so attractive to real estate fund managers? The Merricks Capital Partners Fund returned returned 0.7%* in May and 10.1%* on an annualised basis since inception. The Fund intends to declare a 4.0% distribution on 31 July 2024, which will be paid in mid-August. Global equity markets bounced back to a positive month in May while bond yields traded in a tighter range. Credit and FX hedging cost for the month was 13bps of Fund performance as a result of credit spreads tightening in a risk-on environment. Australia’s CPI print at 3.6% indicates a higher for longer rate environment, and the housing market’s continued supply-demand dislocation is evident with YoY rent growth at 7.5%... Following on from the recent updates to the UK’s listing regime, the FCA announces changes to capital raising rules as part of its mission to strengthen UK capital markets. How might this impact businesses? Capital markets partner David Robinson was recently featured in Portfolio Adviser sharing his thoughts on the changes. He commented: “The FCA’s proposals will be welcomed, particularly by smaller-cap issuers for whom the costs of producing a prospectus are often disproportionate. The proposal to increase the threshold for triggering a prospectus from 20% to 75% of existing share capital and the use of a public offer platform should allow companies to raise funds more easily, more cost effectively and from a wider investor base.
