I've been... - Teacher of History - Educational Visits Coordinator - Pupil Premium Champion - Head of History (With Politics and Sociology) - Acting Head of Humanities - Team Leader - Associate SLT for Disadvantaged Groups - Assistant Head for Teaching and Learning - Director of Sixth Form - Director of Studies - Deputy Headteacher However the most important title to me remains 'Dad'. One of the highlights of my academic journey has been attending fully funded academic trips to Leeds, Bradford, Durham, Manchester, and London in the past three months. Each trip was sponsored, with stays in nice suites, insightful tours, and the chance to network and meet amazing people. It’s a beautiful mix of learning and enjoyment—having organisations sponsor your trips while you learn, network, and have fun is a rare opportunity! With application season here, Here are some social mobility organisations that I’ve been affiliated with and benefited from during my first year. These organisations gave me access to mentorships and fully funded opportunities. Hopefully, these programs can do the same for you: 🌸 Young Women Into Finance YWIF has been incredibly impactful for me. They offer a five-year program that includes the CISI scholarship and paid internships in the finance industry through their program. 🌸The Social Mobility Foundation SMF is fantastic for developing practical skills through in-person events. They run extended sessions on presentation skills, teamwork, and other essential competencies. They also feature work experience placements and partner with prestigious companies to provide valuable industry exposure. It’s definitely a top pick for anyone looking to build real-world experience. 🌸Social Mobility Business Partnership SMBP is a great organisation that provides work experience across different sectors—all packed into one week! They focus on helping students from less privileged backgrounds gain insight into a variety of industries. 🌸The Sutton Trust As a member, you get access to personal statement reviews, university trips as well as industry-specific trips, which help you gain experience and network within your chosen field. 🌸The Black Apprentice Network (BAN) BAN is an excellent community that connects aspiring apprentices, especially those from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds, with mentors and current apprentices. It’s a fantastic community if you're looking to explore apprenticeships across various industries. 🌸Zero Gravity I’ve heard great things about Zero Gravity, even though my application wasn’t successful last year. They pair students from disadvantaged backgrounds with access to work experiences, scholarships, internships and more, I’m hopeful to reapply this year! 🌸Migrant Leaders They support young migrants, matching them with mentors and providing leadership training to help you overcome barriers and achieve prestigious roles in top organisations or universities. 🌸Catalyst Education Program While I haven’t applied to Catalyst, I’ve heard great things about their CISI exam scholarship for Year 12 students. “Not accepting CV's from Agencies” Written on the bottom of a job advert for a teacher 🧑🏼‍🏫 But here we are, it’s the second time you’ve advertised the role, and I know you know that I know - that you won’t get the response you need. Plus you needed this role filled in September… I get it. There is a cost involved in using an egency to help recruit, and there is a lot of people out there that have given "supply" a bad name. But here’s the thing: not all of us are cut from the same cloth. Best in Class don't just throw CVs at a wall and hope something sticks. We don't just put bums on seats. We build long-term relationships with schools, easing their stress, and handling the heavy lifting—writing job adverts for a variety of sites, sifting through CVs, screening candidates, scheduling interviews, and handling offers. That’s a full-time job on its own! Recruitment is 100% of our job, it's probably only a small part of your job as schools seem tolove giving this role to Heads PA, Exam officers and many other roles to balance. According to research, Teacher vacancies have increased by 20% in the last 2 years. If you’re not tapping into the passive talent pool, teachers who let us search for their roles, teachers who aren't going to apply for your role, you're missing out on a lot of potentially excellent candidates. Something to consider: 🔹 Recruiters have specialist, deep market insights. 🔹 We have access to passive talent you won’t find on a job board. 🔹 We have the time to get to know our candidates to find the perfect fit. 🔹 Most importantly, we get the job done. I personally think schools could work WITH recruitment companies, using us as an extra source of candidates, all together in the same pool going forward for the role, the best candidate who suits the school is then taken. We've done this in a few schools and would love to do this more. Because let’s be real…continuing to repost the same job advert isn’t working, is it? Are Online Short Courses a Revenue Opportunity for UK Universities? 🚀 The financial struggles of UK higher education institutions (HEIs) are evident, with over 50 institutions cutting jobs and closing departments. As undergraduate fees depreciate and international student numbers decline, it's crucial for UK HEIs to rethink their strategies and explore new revenue streams. 📉 Traditional degree programs are facing challenges, but there's a growing trend towards shorter, online courses. Neil Mosley's recent blog highlights the potential for these courses to provide a profitable revenue stream. The PwC report even notes that short online courses can be a financially viable option for universities. 🎓 Many HEIs have already ventured into the world of Continuing Education (CE) and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) with significant revenue. For instance, in 2022-23, UK HEIs generated approximately £720 million from CE and CPD courses, with top institutions like Kaplan Open Learning, LSE, and the University of Edinburgh leading the way. 📈 However, there's still untapped potential.
