Last week, I shared some thoughts,and today, I’m continuing by highlighting two key initiatives the NDC will undertake under the leadership of H.E. John Mahama to revive the energy sector. Under his leadership, the NDC is committed to resetting Ghana and building a stronger, more transparent, and accountable energy sector. Ring-fencing ESLA funds for their intended purposes: We will ensure that the Energy Sector Levies Act (ESLA) funds are strictly used for their designated objectives, reducing energy sector debts and enhancing financial stability. This step promotes transparency and fiscal discipline, which will lead to more reliable power supply for households and businesses alike. Ghanaians will benefit from improved energy services and reduced financial burden on the state. ICYMI: African Energy Chamber Vice President Verner Ayukegba participated in an interview on ARISE News discussing the recent trends in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry ahead of the African Energy Chamber (AEC) Nigerian roadshow. Mr Ayukegba highlighted a number of exciting developments in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, which have the potential to stimulate investments in #Nigeria and ultimately enhance Africa’s energy potential. The Chamber is closely monitoring Oando taking over ENI assets in Nigeria which will lead to a significant increase in Oando’s production in Nigeria by 100%, amounting to about 50 thousand barrels a day. On the challenges facing the oil and gas sector in Nigeria, Mr Ayukegba noted the challenge posed by Nigeria’s currency devaluation and the absence of critical capital which hinders effective development within the industry. Mr Ayukegba reemphasised the need for an enabling environment as a catalyst for investment while highlighting that the recent trends pioneered by indigenous oil companies attest to Nigeria’s readiness for business. Consequently, Mr Ayukekba underscores the need to develop infrastructure for the processing of gas as it has the potential to guarantee cheaper access to power for the people while advancing industry in Nigeria. #ICYMI: In a recent interview with Arise News, NJ Ayuk JD, MBA., Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber , discussed "Africa in a Global Energy Dynamic." Mr Ayuk highlighted Africa's critical role in the global energy landscape, emphasising the continent's abundant resources and strategic importance. For the upcoming AEC African Energy Week (#AEW) 2024: Invest in African Energies, excitement is building. Mr Ayuk emphasised the event's significance for Africa, especially with the return of the OPEC roundtable discussion, which will open doors for new deals and investments in the continent. He emphasises the significance of dialogue on the African continent and the need for respect and local empowerment in harnessing Africa's abundant resources. "It is important to have these conversations in Africa. Anything African should be done in Africa. We need to bring respect to this continent that has abundant resources." When asked about the acquisition of Africa Oil Week (AOW) by Sankofa Events, Ayuk stated: "The acquisition by Sankofa Events of AOW is inconsequential to AEW. Shell impact investment firm, All On, has just released its 2024 All Off-grid Energy Report, which reveals that there are enormous benefits of mini-grids in Nigeria but that their progress is hindered by policy and regulatory constraints. Funded by Shell but conducted by Nextier Power Nigeria Limited, the study surveyed 21 mini-off grids in various areas across Nigeria. And identified market uncertainty as well as the lack of market intelligence as major obstacles to the growth of #renewable energy in Nigeria. As a result, the study calls for a comprehensive review of renewable energy policies in #Nigeria to address the lingering power crisis in the country. It also advocates for the widespread adoption of off-grid renewable energy, especially solar PV, by Nigerian homes and businesses. I strongly advise that Nigerians adopt solar PVs – an eco-friendly renewable #energy – whose price has markedly gone down in the past few years, proving a better option that can save them the financial burden of spending some $14 billion yearly on small-scale power generators. ~ VJB

The African Energy Chamber (AEC) led by Executive Chairman NJ Ayuk JD, MBA. – met with Sonangol CEO Sebastião Gaspar Martins in Luanda this week, where the parties discussed Sonangol’s vision for the oil and gas industry. Martins is speaking at the African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energy conference this November – Africa’s premier energy event, hosted in Cape Town. The AEC believes that Sonangol is a strategic partner for Angola’s oil and gas industry and will continue to play a major role in facilitating investment and driving project developments. With a focus on expanding exploration and production, the company plays a critical role in Angola’s efforts to boost its oil and gas industry and bolster economic growth. Angola aims to produce 1.1 million barrels of oil per day (bpd) by 2027, with plans to reach two million bpd in the long-term. At the same time, the country aims to increase the share of natural gas in the energy mix to 25% by 2025, highlighting strategic opportunities for foreign investors and project developers. To achieve these goals, the country’s NOC Sonangol has undergone a transformation – underpinned by a privatization initiative spearheaded by the government. Now, Sonangol has emerged as a strong and reliable partner for oil and gas companies, and is committed to ushering in a new era of economic growth on the back of oil and gas development.

The commencement of new oil wells under the Jubilee South East project has significantly boosted Ghana’s crude oil production.  This has led to a 10.7 per cent increase in output and a record high for the country’s petroleum receipts. According to the 2024 semi-annual report by the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC), the total petroleum receipts for the first half of 2024 rose by 55.6%, reaching $840.8 million, compared to $540.5 million in the same period of 2023. This surge in revenue is attributed to a significant rise in crude oil production, which jumped from 22.45 million barrels in the first half of 2023 to 24.86 million barrels in the first half of 2024. The report also highlighted a dramatic 115.5% increase in Corporate Income Tax (CIT), which grew from $166.51 million in the first half of 2023 to $358.8 million in 2024, further boosting the country’s petroleum revenue. GHANA:Oil and Gas News In a move to transform Ghana’s energy sector, the Government of Ghana has signed a US$12 billion agreement with TCP-UIC Consortium which comprises Touchstone Capital Group Holdings Ltd., UIC Energy Ghana Ltd., China Wuhan Engineering Co. Ltd., and China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Co. Ltd for the development of the first phase of the Petroleum Hub project in the Jomoro Municipal Area in the Western Region. This project aims at positioning Ghana as the destination for energy trading in the West Africa sub-region. This agreement is a critical step towards the President’s vision of Ghana becoming a regional hub for petroleum refining, storage, and distribution. The Petroleum Hub project is expected to accelerate the growth of Ghana’s petroleum downstream sub-sector and make it a major player in the economy, creating jobs, attracting foreign direct investment, and enhancing energy security. #Aberdeen would have been seriously hit by the reduction in students looking to study disciplines associated with the oil industry from Nigeria, a #petrostate, experiencing significant economic challenges & currency devaluation. Interest from prospective students in #Nigeria has fallen the most in the #UK – down 40.2%, & in #Norway down 40.6% likely due to limitations on dependant visas in the former & the introduction of #internationalstudent fees in the latter,” Cara Skikne Studyportals tells The PIE. “University of Aberdeen could be forced to make close to £14 million of further job cuts & savings as the historic institution fights to safeguard its #future. A total of £10m has been set aside for another round of voluntary severance & early retirements for staff, to help plug a predicted “financial gap” of £13.8m in 2025/26. It would follow moves towards a £12m reduction in staff costs & an £7.7m cut in operating expenditure over recent months. A University and College Union (UCU) official said the news would “do nothing to avert the worries of staff” at the ancient institution, & urged bosses to rule out compulsory redundancies. However, the #university described the discussions as part of normal “scenario planning” & said further staff reductions were not part of “current planning expectations”. Founded in 1495, the University of Aberdeen is the third oldest in Scotland and the fifth oldest university in the UK. ACCRA, GHANA - GOIL PLC, TotalEnergies and Shell which used to be the big players in #Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector have been losing out on market share in the last few months, data from the NATIONAL PETROLEUM AUTHORITY, (NPA) has shown. According to the NPA, petrol and diesel sales of GOIL, TotalEnergies and Shell declined in August 2024 compared to January 2024. The data shows that GOIL sold 56,281,500 litres for diesel and petrol in January, but as at August, it was doing 52,886,500 litres representing a variance of about 6% decline. TotalEnergies did 31,302,000 litres in January, but as at August, it was doing 30,294,000, which reflects about 3% decline.
