The KE Hub facilitates connections with university-based mathematical scientists from across the UK, and enables business, industry, and government departments (B.I.G.) to benefit from the power of cutting-edge mathematical ideas. These are online scoping sessions where one B.I.G. partner presents a challenge to interested academics. The atmosphere is friendly and informal, and the aim is to discuss: ▪ Can the mathematical sciences help address the challenge? ▪ Who would like to take on the challenge? ▪ What mechanisms are most appropriate for moving forward? A new report from Universities UK and a series of experts, including Professor Nick Pearce and Professor Matt Dickson from the University of Bath Institute for Policy Research (IPR), have set out a bold package of reforms to widen opportunity and boost the sector’s contribution to growing the economy. The detailed report includes recommendations on how universities can do more to break down barriers to opportunity, help boost the economy, train doctors and nurses of the future and support the drive to net zero. The blueprint argues that universities provide many public benefits – not just benefits to individuals through higher earnings. Worth reading to get a sense of engagement with the Green Paper and some nice graphics - but limited additional insight tbh? Industrial strategy depends on the right targeting for government support, skills development, regulatory reforms, and coordinated (regional?) efforts to align/manage public and private sector collaboration ..... etc.

I was glad to be able to contribute to this thought-provoking piece by Chris Parr for Research Professional news, looking at the UK HE policy agenda for the coming year. Obviously, the financial sustainability of the sector is the No. 1 concern: at the same time, let's take the opportunity to build a long-term consensus on the sector, which has 2050 as a horizon, not just the life of the current parliament. Thank you to Dr Catherine Tilley, Dr Matteo Montecchi and Dr Shalen Fu at the Centre for Sustainable Business at King's College London for hosting me this week to present my research on how organisations can unlock the potential of CMOs to drive sustainability. Great post as always Helen Bevan. The 2nd and 3rd points are most important (I think?) as separate bureaucratic infrastructures (like a "Quality team"), no matter how well intentioned or talented, can perhaps set up a culture where the people most able to make effective changes do not see it as a core part of their role. Not mentioned here (but perhaps embedded in the financial considerations in the first point?) are the valid concerns that improvement work will lead to jobs disappearing, or perhaps "wasteful" work being replaced with work that is markedly worse than the status quo. I wonder if this latest wave of "AI related lay-offs" in the private sector will lead to further reluctance to participate in improvement activities, and if so, what could be done to consider these relatively new influential factors like AI forward? Mixed Reality Leadership Deficit at Board and C-Suite Level At the University of Buckingham (www.buckingham.ac.uk) the Centre for Security, Intelligence and Cyber Studies is researching the new Mixed Reality world we inhabit. A focus of mine is Mixed Reality Leadership Deficit and Integrated Hardening (c). The leadership deficit in Mixed Reality (MR) at the board and C-suite levels refers to the gap in understanding, strategic integration, and effective utilization of MR technologies within top leadership. This deficit poses challenges in fully leveraging MR’s potential for competitive advantage and operational efficiency. A key proxy for understanding if your organisation suffers from MR deficit is Andy Jenkinson's focus on vulnerable DNS Servers as an access point for cyber attacks, (See his LinkedIn posts). Key Aspects of the Deficit: * Lack of Understanding * Technical Complexity *Educational Gaps: Many board members and C-suite executives lack sufficient education and training on MR technologies. Following the King's Speech, which mentioned new measures to regulate AI and tech, we've published our call for what tech policy in the UK could be. We argue for a safe, sustainable, and empowering digital future that works for everyone. Our proposal focuses on: 1️⃣ A Digital Economy that Works for the UK 2️⃣ Clean Energy and Secure Infrastructure 3️⃣ Rights-Based Data and Internet Governance Our team at the Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy worked on a model for responsible digital growth, applying safe, responsible, and ethical AI to the economy while protecting fundamental rights. Having heard what has now been laid out by the new government, here are the questions that I'm asking: How might elements of the work that we have done on AI and work be brought into legislation on employment rights? How could we harness technology to reduce violence against women and girls and make digital society safe for their full and democratic participation? Can the push for expanding infrastructure to support growth in AI be balanced with the UK's net zero goals? A huge thanks to my panelists at the Times Higher Education Interdisciplinary Science Forum - helping us to navigate the challenges of measuring interdisciplinarity. Some of the highlights (from my perspective) 📡 How can we move to more continuous measures rather than categorical ones? 💊 Bibliometrics are useful, but open to abuse, and are difficult to interpret for interdisciplinarity - how can we improve outcome measures? 🧬 Is it possible to measure the 'blue-sky' element of interdisciplinarity? 🔭 We should recognise that our alumni are a key output of the research process (not just citations!) and we should evaluate the interdisciplinary futures that they are creating....
