From MFA to 'MFA'' (Made for Attention) The top three metrics for advertisers with the lowest proportion of ads delivered to MFA websites are clicks, incrementality, and attention. This is in line with many media strategies from cutting-edge agencies. Media buyers with high exposure to MFAs prioritise legacy impression-focused metrics, whereas those with low exposure focus on tangible effectiveness-based metrics. While clicks prioritise conversion and incrementality prioritise cost efficiency, attention serves as an important buying signal to ensure that your ads are getting seen with the right level of attention for each campaign, offering a new layer for media quality and performance. 🔴 Target websites with rich, readable content: Data shows that the top 25% of domains drive 11× higher attention to display ads and 5× higher attention to video ads. This predominantly comes down to a better site layout and superior content. Websites with a rich content experience leads to deeper engagement, slower scrolling, and longer viewable time — all factors that drive higher attention scores to ads. 🔴 Plan media around high interest site categories: When considering site lists and PMPs that target specific categories, attention can help when it comes to determining the right media mix for the right site groups. 🔴 Consider position, ad size, and ad clutter: Ads at the centre of the screen receive 20% higher attention than other ads. And the more ads on a screen, the less attention: when websites have 3+ ads on the screen at a time, attention drops by 50% on desktop and drops by 500% on mobile. 🗳️ Labour & Tories Both Set To Spend Millions On Ads... 👥 Gone are the days of micro-targeted ads with ultra-niche messaging and in its place a deluge of catch-all advertising targeting everyone. ❌ Ben Tappin, a research fellow at Royal Holloway, University of London, said his research had found “mixed evidence for the claim that microtargeting changes voters’ minds”. As a result, he said, microtargeting “may be something of a red herring”. 💸 Labour is already burning through more than £100,000 a day on Facebook and Instagram adverts, according to Who Targets Me analysis, with even more money spent buying adverts around Google search results. 🤔 Unfortunately we live in a two-party system where it's pretty much impossible to displace the incumbents, and while platforms like Facebook now forbid political parties from deeper levels of voter targeting not capping their spending exacerbates an already unfairly weighted system. Also, if we are to agree with Tappin, doesn't that bring the whole performance marketing ecosystem into contention or is his research lacking? A lot of industry talks seems to be going on at the moment about how marketing should work to reduce carbon footprint in digital advertising campaigns 🌳 📣 🌍     At the same time there seems to be a gap between this stated will and actual actions taken by most advertisers. Despite saying quality and green aspects are important in the media buying, I most often see brands end up prioritizing quantity over quality. That being more reach and cheap impressions and ad contacts over sustainable campaigning. You can actually take some easy actions to reduce carbon footprint in digital advertising. Here’s a guiding top 10 list of actions to look into:    1. Demand use of local server distribution of ad impressions 2. Demand “green ad hosting” in general. Pay a little extra and feel good.  3. Leverage programmatic and geo-contextual opportunities to minimize unnecessary data transmission instead of hammering everybody  4. Invest in optimizing landing pages more  5. Run fewer campaigns and leverage owned and earned media opportunities more  6. Invest in green sustainability projects to compensate for your digital CO2 emissions  7. Reduce ad frequency. Spam and hyper-frequency are not God (and users hate it btw) 8. Use super light ad formats based on WebGL instead of HTML (less load on transmission) 9. Compress images, videos and multimedia to hit technical and visual sweet spot 10. Run campaigns with 25% fewer impressions but with better creatives that deliver +25% better performance (and better memorability)    Actions 1 to 7 is on you.
