If you want to rebrand, your brand identity is a key part of that process. I helped the Green Accord to rebrand, so they could raise their profile and reach new customers. The Green Accord is an accreditation scheme for businesses, run by Exeter City Council. It offers an affordable route to improving environmental performance, by reducing carbon emissions and business costs. We first worked with the team around 2008, when the scheme was originally introduced. Fourteen years later, as priorities changed, Exeter City Council wanted to relaunch the scheme and drive engagement. So they asked us to help. We designed a new brand identity that is distinctive and memorable, to raise the profile of the Green Accord, in print and online. But we wanted the logo to be more than just a badge. We wanted the logo to reflect that the Green Accord is a journey; an on-going process to achieve - and then maintain - recognition for improved environmental performance. We also wanted to present the Green Accord as a partnership - two elements working together. This can be seen as the business and the Green Accord team, or it can be the relationship between carbon and cost in the business. The rebrand was an opportunity to raise the profile, but also to change opinions. This Tory betting scandal, culture of petty corruption blah blah... I'm all for twisting the knife... BUT what I really want is a keynote talk from the service design team that designed the Gambling Commission's PEP* check process and then buy them a beer** I've worked on incorporating PEP and sanctions checks into service for a large financial services company but can't imagine the fun it'd be to have such a banal regulatory service suddenly be changing the future of the country *Politically Exposed Person **Or other beverage of their choice #serviceDesign

I’m delighted to have been commissioned to write for the next issue of ‘Centrum’ the @PSMGLLP magazine. I’ll be turning my attention to -  Canva: The good, the bad and the ugly Canva is widely recognised for its user-friendly platform and diverse range of templates, making it accessible to individuals without graphic design training. However, its popularity raises the question: is this accessibility a double-edged sword? Just as we can all use a calculator without being accountants, the ease of Canva may have its drawbacks.   For organisations with non-designers utilising Canva, there exists a hidden cost. Enthusiasts may unknowingly transition from creating simple online graphics to unintentionally diluting their organisation's brand. In today's digital landscape, platforms like Canva have revolutionised design, granting individuals with a computer and internet access the ability to craft visually appealing content without formal design training. While this empowerment is commendable, it also highlights a significant issue.

In a recent post, I talked about the use of industry terminology putting off your customers and instead using wording that your customer understands. But there's an even more potent methodology which can really take your brand skywards. Terminology which doesn't actually exist yet. An example - in 1786, the main use for steam engines was intended to be clearing mines, a task which was currently being done by horses. But Scottish engineer James Watt, knew that if he went to mine owners to sell his steam engine as a better solution and started talking about cylinder pressure and combustion chambers, they would very quickly ask him to leave because they would have no idea what he was talking about. So, Watt came up with a brand new piece of terminology which he knew would appeal to the mine owners, horsepower. He knew that if he could showcase that his steam engine could replace 25 horses, or 50 horses, this language would appeal to what the mine owners already knew, and justify not only the product but also the price.
