The latest Office for National Statistics UK Labour Market Overview for May 2024 highlights some concerning trends that align with the challenges identified in the Eploy UK Candidate Attraction Report 2024 and the Talos360 Future of Talent Report. Employment is down, unemployment and economic inactivity are up, and the number of job vacancies has fallen compared to the previous quarter. This points to a tightening labour market where candidate scarcity, identified as the top challenge by both the Eploy and Talos360 reports, is likely to become even more acute. In this environment, the recommendations from the two reports become all the more pertinent: - Adopt a skills-based approach to hiring to expand the talent pool - Enhance the candidate experience to attract top talent - Embrace flexible working to meet candidate expectations - Leverage data and AI responsibly in the recruitment process - Double down on diversity, equity and inclusion efforts Organisations that proactively implement these strategies will be best positioned to navigate the talent challenges ahead. Measuring ROI and business impact is something we talk about a lot in marketing. But how do you do that with your L&D function? I spoke to L&D expert Charlotte Smith find out more about this and understand the critical role data plays in maximising your ROI in L&D. The highlights: 🔥 Forget magic bullets L&D builds the habits & behaviors that drive deals. Measure how you go from 1 deal per head per month to 1.5 or even 2. 🔥 Data is your best friend How many calls lead to deals? How many interviews lead offers? This is crucial to measure L&D success. These are basic metrics that empower your L&D pro to demonstrate real ROI. 🔥 Focus on foundational skills. L&D can train consultants to be true subject matter experts and improve the quality of their client meetings and calls. Throughout my career I have always looked at my own skills and experience and how I could enhance my technical skills further. I wanted to learn and succeed in my roles. Many times I have self funded courses and learning opportunities that would benefit my career. I believe organisations should evaluate what they have in place and encourage learning and development by creating a culture of continuous development from the top down - Always learning and developing. If you take the time to assess your employees' unique skills and experiences through well-designed talent plans, they will be more engaged, feel valued, and contribute to business success. While "cat cuddles" may not be mentioned in Talos360's latest report on the future of talent, the list of motivators for UK employees it presents are as diverse as they are insightful: 1. Salary - 45% of employees say their compensation is a primary motivator. 2. Passion for the Job - 44% are driven by engaging in work they love. 3. Team Dynamics - 41% find motivation from working within a great team. 4. Company Culture - 34% are inspired by a positive workplace culture. 5. Recognition -Appreciation from the team is crucial for 34% of the workforce. These insights reflect the changing landscape of employee engagement but also highlight the need for organisations to adapt and evolve. The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) and The Open University recently revealed the results of a survey exploring the current working landscape for businesses, and some of the figures shared in an article by HR News on the subject were quite eye-opening. Businesses must invest in their people, and not just for today but for the future too. It is vital that our people feel valued in the workplace, and they in turn will feel happier at work and more productive. It is time for businesses to re-think their talent acquisition strategies, and embracing skills-based hiring is one crucial step we should all take. Sustainable growth depends on businesses addressing skills gaps and investing in their future. We recently held a session at Aylesbury Grammar School where we shared the importance of highlighting skills on CVs. We believe that it is never too early to think about the skills that you are building everyday and the difference that they can make. It is important for employers to recognise the value that these skills can bring to their organisation.

The new government should also focus on shifting negative attitudes around diversity, equity and inclusion.
