From Revolution to Evolution: Industry 5.0 places humans in the center You may be thinking Industry 5.0, what is that and when is it coming? I know that we are still embracing the Industry 4.0 era and partnering across industries to accelerate the digitalization journey. But the shift from Industry 4.0 to 5.0 has already begun and it is expected to happen much more quickly than the transitions between earlier industrial revolutions. I see Industry 5.0 as more of an evolution versus a revolution, building on the digitalization journey that enterprises are already on and one that embraces technologies like AI, Cloud Computing and 6G in a more human-centric, personal and sustainable way. What excites me about Industry 5.0 is that it will enable people to do the things that we are uniquely good at versus doing things we don’t want to do or are not able to do. Future technologies will make a significant difference in improving worker safety and I believe future jobs will blend advanced technologies and digital skills with uniquely human skills to yield the highest level of productivity, efficiency, safety and sustainability. Nokia has recently announced its Exponential Era series with Bloomberg media to highlight that the potential of communication networks goes beyond simply connecting people and things. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Hannah Fry, mathematician and broadcaster, and talk about the coming fifth industrial revolution and how it puts people back in the equation. Wouldn't it be good to get the experience you want, when you want it and where you want it Ericsson have recently published the first in depth report on the steps to move towards introducing differentiated connectivity and the rationale behind it. Its a brief and very insightful read that captures the opportunity brought about by 5GSA and how it could help such a diverse set of scenarios from gaming, factory and family communication. I do like the Explore - Scale - Monetise steps it captures and shows the essence of what 5G can do to make a difference, then scale it to benefit others. Furthermore it shows the importance of collaboration and aggregation. Nokia to acquire Infinera for $2.3B. For me, Telecoms, especially Telecom Network vendor landscape, is about 2 things - Technology innovation and M&A. In a way, this is what keeps this industry moving. Though we see Nokia and Infinera here, the roots of these companies are in different countries/regions and backgrounds. For example, Finland-based Nokia acquired Alcatel-Lucent (a merger between France-based Alcatel and US-based Lucent in 2006) in 2016. Same for Infinera - they acquired Transmode in 2015, and Coriant (Coriant merged with Tellabs in 2013) in 2018. Earlier in the year we saw Hewlett Packard Enterprise acquiring Juniper Networks for $14B. In 2020, Ribbon Communications acquired ECI Telecom for $486M. In 2021 Adtran combined with ADVA for €880M. Therefore, it's clear that the Telecom Network vendors are making their portfolios fuller by, among other things, combining/expanding IP and optical capabilities or sometimes introducing both Carrier and Enterprise product lines. At the same time, there are others like Ericsson and Cisco who are very much keeping their stronghold in their specific expert areas. There are optically strong players like Ciena too. The question is; should I be, as a vendor, a one-stop shop for solutions (access to core, wired/fiber & wireless, fixed & mobile, optical & IP, SDN/NFV, OSS/BSS/CRM/ERP, ...) or keep my expertise within my expert area? Looks like the complete E2E portfolios are going to win, especially at a time where the System Integration among multiple vendor platforms is getting complicated and costly. Some call this vendor-lock-in. So, be careful and play your cards wisely. On the other side, the Chinese Telecom Network vendors, Huawei, and ZTE Corporation are watching all these M&As happening in the Western world. Ericsson’s technology leadership is validated once again, this time as a leader in core, the brain of a network, by global technology research and advisory firm Omdia. In Omdia’s Market Landscape: Core Vendors 2024 analysis, Ericsson has been recognized as the leader for its core portfolio. Within the category, Ericsson also achieved the highest scores for core portfolio breadth, cloud native readiness, automation and policy and charging. According to Omdia, the most crucial factors are core portfolio breadth and cloud-native readiness are extremely important and Ericsson excelled in both areas, earning the top score for core portfolio breadth, which encompasses both 4G/LTE and 5G network functions. Additionally, Ericsson achieved the highest ranking in cloud-native readiness, indicating that it is considered the most advanced in its efforts to provide 5G Core containerized network functions (CNFs). Ericsson also scored highest in two additional subcategories. In Automation, Omdia notes that Ericsson ”obtained the top position in this category for the work it has done on its product upgrade automation solution.” Omdia also awarded Ericsson the top spot in the Policy and Charging subcategory, reflecting the dominant strength of its offerings in these key areas. In its analysis, Omdia noted: ”Ericsson is a strong vendor with good business performance in terms of core revenue market share and number of live 5G core deployments. My colleague, Geoff Blaber recently attended Intel's Vision 2024 conference in the USA. The Ericsson CTO Tech Trends is always a yearly highlight for me. For the last 10 years Ericsson has shared insights about what tech trends will be vital for the ICT Industry and beyond - over the years I have appreciated the foresight they have provided plus the rationale that supports each trend too. In every case since I have been reading them they either spark my curiosity to explore more about a specific trend or trigger a what if question... both are definitely positive experiences. Mind the Gap....... The monetization gap is real, has existed for years and is arguably the main reason why telcos are on a path to commoditization. Continued over investment in new technology areas at the expense of seeking the maximum return from those investments. But something has changed. The plateauing of and in some cases the decline in mobile traffic levels creates an opportunity for a strategic re-think, a re-balancing of investment focus away from high capital intensity towards R&D, with much greater weight placed on the services consumers / businesses require and the network needed to deliver that.
