How can PR leaders improve employee wellbeing? The number of professionals citing poor mental health and wellbeing within the PR sector has been less than desirable. And, according to the latest research by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) and the Public Relations and Communications Association (PRCA), it hasn’t improved. A survey of PR practitioners in the UK, conducted by Opinium, found that the diagnosis of mental health conditions in the industry is on the rise, as 91% of respondents admitted to having poor mental health at work in the past 12 months. Meanwhile, the proportion of PR professionals who have been diagnosed with a mental health condition has risen to 33%, an 8% increase from last year’s result of 25%. Additionally, the number of PR pros who admitted to finding their job stressful has “stayed consistent” since 2021, with 29% continuing to rate their stress levels in the higher tier of eight to 10. The speculation about what the first #Labour #Budget in more than 14 years might contain is already getting quite, um, imaginative - and we still have three weeks to go. What might be more useful in the long run is for #tax, #finance and #legal professionals to plan how, on 30 October, they might rapidly identify the stuff hidden in the Budget documents that will have a real effect on their clients, and share those insights with the media. #PR

Not so much a lightbulb moment as an ongoing evolution of an industry that was once very publicly accused of 'fannying about with press releases'. I defy anyone to have made the prediction 20 years ago that PR would become the wonderful toolkit of tactics that we have today. Of course, we expected change, but some of the ways in which we are expected to adapt copy and to deliver content are way beyond the parameters we were once given. While that can be somewhat overwhelming, not least as every day really is a school day, it is also really exciting as we explore current trends and new and innovative ways of working. We will be heading to London tomorrow to meet with a client and to capture multimedia content, trend-led social posts and traditional editorial copy to share with media. Some tips from me on entering these (or indeed any) awards. 🏆 On discussing Press For Attention PR’s sponsored category, Responsible Business, Greg shared: “First up, tell us judges a story. We don’t need to hear about what you do, your history and inside leg measurements. Set the scene by all means but grab our attention early on by explaining the problem or challenge as it stood and how you tackled it and crucially…why? How did you change things? What does it mean for the user/stakeholder? Remember, nobody wants a drill…they want a hole in the wall. Show us the results.

PR Week asked me to provide an instant reaction to today's UK budget announcement. Here it is. Link to the PR Week story in the first comment. Labour has said from the beginning that they wanted to prioritise serious policy-making and responsible governing. But since taking office, their communications approach has made their policy workings appear chaotic. As a result, this budget has been a particularly gruesome exercise in public sausage-making. Having finally reached the formal red box moment, the resulting sausage looks edible, and even enticing. Delivered with confidence, the Chancellor found means to invest in key areas of the UK economy, provided funding to stabilise the NHS, and support substantial capital initiatives. Still, much of the burden of rising taxes falls on business. Increased employer NI and a significant increase to minimum wage will make it harder for businesses to expand payrolls. She’s been careful to reassure gilt markets, and the price of UK government debt dropped substantially during her speech, although it has ticked upwards this afternoon. Follow-on analysis will focus on whether Labour over-egged its doom and gloom messaging in the run-up and whether the economic strategy goes far enough. But considered in the round, the Chancellor’s proposals read as reasonable and responsible given the UK’s fiscal realities. She has also projected a greater degree of certainty and predictability. And with global upheaval and unpredictability sure to surge following next week’s U.S. election, this budget might help position the UK as a bastion of relative calm and normality in a messy geopolitical landscape.

Expect people to react to crises and events as humans, and think carefully about the crew on the ship as you navigate the choppy seas! 👉 Preparedness can make a huge difference when a crisis hits. Whether it's an event you foresaw or is something you didn't predict, it will help that you've tested yourself and your people, and identified the roles, resources and relationships you'll need. 👉 Crisis communicators are a fun bunch! #crisiscommunications #pr #communications
