ABP and px Group launch plans for Port of Barry Clean Growth Hub Associated British Ports (ABP) and px Group have launched an expression of interest from businesses to benefit from low-carbon infrastructure. The project aims to transform a large area of the operational port into an area of low-carbon, high-growth infrastructure investment. The site has in excess of 100 acres of development land earmarked for investee companies who are: -Specialists in rare earth processing; -Battery materials manufacturers; -Manufacturers who are part of green energy and net zero supply chains; and -Developing Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) business models. London Gateway is celebrating the operational launch of the world’s first all-electric berth with the arrival of its first ships, including the MSC Sena. The vessel is now being serviced by an innovative all-electric fleet of vehicles and equipment, including four of Europe’s largest quay cranes, straddle carriers, and automatic stacking cranes, establishing a new global benchmark for low-carbon shipping facilities. The opening of the fourth berth has added a further 200 permanent jobs at London Gateway, which is a part of Thames Freeport, and will play a key role in DP World's plan for the site to have the UK’s largest container port by trading volume within five years. Ernst Schulze, Chief Executive Officer for Ports & Terminals at DP World in the UK, said: “The arrival of the first ship at our new all-electric fourth berth is a huge landmark for DP World’s ambitions in the UK. We have already invested more than £2bn in the building of our modern and efficient facility at London Gateway in the last decade, connecting the UK with global supply chains and export markets. The contract for CalMac to run ferries on Scotland's west coast has been extended by a year. It comes as ministers are considering a direct award to the Scottish government-owned operator without a competitive tendering process. A direct award is Transport Scotland's preferred option, rather than accepting bids from rival firms. The contract had been due to expire on 30 September, but it said an extra year would allow further "due diligence" work to take place. The move comes after a long period of problems on the CalMac network. The firm has struggled to maintain services with an ageing and increasingly unreliable fleet which it leases from another government-owned agency CMAL. There have been delays to repairs to the main Arran ferry, cancellation of services to South Uist and islanders on Mull have also faced frequent disruption. The progress of green shipping corridors is a really interesting area to watch. We all know that the key issues with alternative fuels in shipping are A. the availability and B. the cost. These corridors present a unique opportunity to overcome these challenges and really start testing and understanding how we can make green alternatives work. Right now, it looks like methanol is the go-to alternative however, there are a number being discussed and trailed. Hopefully, the Port of Tyne can be at the forefront of this in the UK's drive to be a Clean Energy Superpower.

𝗨𝗦 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝘂𝗹𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝟱𝟬% 𝗽𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 Dockworkers along the US East and Gulf Coasts launched a major strike on Tuesday 1st October, marking the first large-scale stoppage in nearly 50 years. This action has brought roughly half of the nation’s ocean shipping to a halt after wage negotiations broke down during labour contract talks. The strike impacts the flow of goods, from food to automobiles, across dozens of ports from Maine to Texas. Economists warn this disruption could cost the US economy billions per day, jeopardize jobs, and potentially fuel inflation. Harold Daggett, leader of the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA), argues that employers, including Maersk and its APM Terminals North America, have not offered sufficient pay raises and are pushing for automation projects that could eliminate jobs. The US Maritime Alliance (USMX) countered with an offer to raise wages by nearly 50%, while Daggett and the union are holding firm on their demand for a 61.5% increase. The National Retail Federation has urged President Biden’s administration to intervene, citing "devastating consequences" for the economy. However, Biden officials have stated they will not take direct action, encouraging both parties to reach an agreement instead. Annual international shipping CO₂ emissions have roughly doubled since 1990, and now account for roughly 10 percent of global transportation CO₂ emissions. CATAGEN is part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 4 (CMDC4), funded by the UK Department for Transport (DfT) and delivered by Innovate UK to decarbonise the UK domestic maritime sector. The Consortium brings diverse partners including technology innovators, fuel distributors, maritime decarbonisation catalyst organisations, and harbour and government authorities. The anticipated strikes at ports across the East and Gulf costs went into effect this morning. Though many businesses implemented backup supply and logistics plans ahead of the work stoppage, the strikes are expected to severely damage supply chains. Brittany Ferries ship Guernsey trial date set The date for when Brittany Ferries will trial berthing a large ship in Guernsey has been announced. The ferry company said last month it would run trials with the 158m (518ft) long Barfleur in St Helier, Jersey, and St Peter Port, Guernsey. Guernsey Ports said following the trial in Jersey last month, Brittany Ferries will bring the Barfleur to St Peter Port at 16:00 BST on Tuesday. Port officials said the trial would not impact scheduled ferry services. The Barfleur can carry 1,212 passengers and is usually based in Poole. Last month's trial in St Helier was described as "successful" by Jersey's head of maritime operations. Ahead of Tuesday's trial, Guernsey Ports said: "Support arrangements are in place to ensure the Barfleur’s safe arrival into the port." Ferry service bids Ahead of the trials, Brittany Ferries said it was committed to supporting Condor, who it is a shareholder of, to deliver "resilience to Channel Island services". Jersey's contract with Condor runs until next year while Guernsey has a memorandum of understanding with the firm. Guernsey and Jersey's governments said earlier this year they would work together to secure a long-term agreement on ferry links to the islands. Deputy Neil Inder, President of Guernsey's Committee for Economic Development Committee, has previously said a formal tender process would start this month. Danish ferry firm DFDS is expected to be one of the bidders, while Condor has said it is "confident" it would prove the company can continue operating services. The world has changed a lot in the last 10 years, so why has the LNG operation requirement not been reviewed? With the Arran route in such a mess and the largest vessel Caledonian Isles languishing in a Liverpool dry dock for unplanned steel corrosion repairs, surely getting the Glen Sannox into operation should have been the overriding priority for the summer rather than commisioning the LNG system which could be done when Glen Rosa enters service. In the legal contract between CMAL and the Operator Calmac Ferries, it is stated very clearly the operator has no control over specifing reqirements for new vessels. The contract very clearly states CMAL are entirely responsible for specifiying design and procurement of new vessels. These vessels have LNG propulsion because CMAL wanted them to have LNG propulsion. It is bizarre they are still insisting the LNG systems are finished when they have not put the bunkering facility in place. Contractually CMAL are also responsible for ensuring the operator properly maintains the vessels and CMAL technical staff carry out twice yearly inspections, one of which is at drydock. So how did the steelwork problems due to poor maintenance over the last 5 years on Caledonian Isles go unnoticed? The people and businesses of Arran must be apoplectic with rage over the arrogant mis-management of this shambles.
