My top tips in exhibiting at an event.... One of my most favourite things to do is meet people... yesterday I was at CENTRAL HALL WESTMINSTER LIMITED at the The BNC Show. So many GREAT connections made! Exhibitions can be seen as a chore as you're standing on your feet all day; saying the same things over and over... but I LOVE IT! I'm a people person; I love connecting with people..... I feel like its my super power. Its a game I love to play in my head is how quickly I can connect! If you exhibit at shows; here are my top tips on how to get best to get the best connections and conversations at the very quickest rate..... 💥 NUMBER 1 is BE GENUINE and CARE! People buy people! 💥 Choose the people you put on your stand carefully; do they have the skill set and right attitude? They are your shop front 💥 Consider the person you are selling too.. and no, I don't mean what do they do or want, but as HUMANS; no one is really comfortable wandering around looking at stuff they don't know to have someone jump down their throat to talk about something they have no interest in... (who likes those shop assistants asking if you need help.. NO!) so.. consider that in your approach... 💥 Does your pop up banner show EXACTLY what you do from afar? Put yourself in the visitor's shoes; they're probably nervous about talking to random people, especially when they don't know if you will offer something they even care about..... so make it easy... big headline facts.. 💥 Do you have a hook; something you can offer them that they want to come and talk to you? Prize give away - a reason that they will be on the lookout for your correspondence or use your services? 💥 You are your shop front..... don't forget your body language can be seen by everyone from close by and afar... You are bored?.. you look bored... You are engaged... you look engaged and approachable! 💥 It's super basic (but I see SO MUCH of it!), but if you sit down on your stand and on your phone/laptop or engaged with something else, people won't stop! and you could miss that 1 person who has all the £££££££ 💥 Open the conversation with a question that is nothing to do with what you're selling - my favourites is commenting that i like something they're wearing, or asking them (if they're looking lost) if I can help... 💥 Follow up. And follow up quickly. Consider your subject line. Make your email punchy. You are in a competitive field and the visitors are going to be inundated with emails. Make yours interesting and make them want to reply to you with a compelling reason they should. I could go on,,,, but then I'll be giving away all my secrets... 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗙𝗬 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘂𝗽 𝟭𝟭%, 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿, 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲: 😍 🍻 Leicestershire brewer and retailer Everards of Leicestershire has reported an 11% increase in turnover for the year to the end of September 2023 to £34.7m and told Propel that it was “trading well” in its current financial year. The company posted an operating profit for the year of £2.2m, 26% ahead of the prior year on a like-for-like pub basis. The company said it continues to invest in its 152-strong estate, with £3.3m spent through revenue and capital in the last 12-months into repairs, compliance, and refurbishments. It said that in the first half of its 2023/24 financial year, sales of drinks to the pub estate are 12% ahead of the prior year, representing a 5% growth in beer volumes. It also said that following investment into a new brewery in 2021 and innovation in cask and keg beer categories, sales of Everards own brewed beer in the pub estate are 18% ahead of the prior year. In 2021 the company invested in a Beer Hall adjoining its brewery at Everards Meadows in Leicestershire. In the first half of the 2023/24 financial year, it said posted Beer Hall sales of £1.5m, 8% ahead of the prior year. Julian Everard, chairman, said it had been an encouraging performance, both for the last financial year and so far this year. Stephen Gould, managing director of Everards, told Propel that trading in the company’s current financial year has “gone very well”. He said: “We continue to invest in the estate, not just in terms of capex, but also in terms of repairs and compliance, so we’re putting money back into the estate, but we’ve got quite a stable estate as well. As a result, we are performing reasonably well in terms of our sales out to our pub estate. There is nervousness, of course, and this is why we stay close to our business owners. And while the cost base has eased in terms of utilities compared to 18 months ago, the labour line for our business owners will have run ahead of inflation and all the industry awaits with some degree of nervousness in regards to business rates in 2025. Because a combination of those two could be the equivalent of a very, very challenging utilities outlook 18 months ago. So, while the top lines are encouraging, we’re staying close in terms of support with our business owners. We think the best way to support those business owners that are talented, that have got really clear business plans is to back them with investment. Because I think the market in the next two to three years will remain quite challenging. So, if you’re well invested and working alongside people, there’s an opportunity in the short to medium term to take some market share as well.”

There were clearly a lot of hard choices that had to be made during this years budget but if you’re every wondering about how tax really affects businesses in Food & Beverage and Farming this is worth a quick look. My thoughts really are with the farming community at the moment, some of the most enterprising farms are already incredibly sensitive to tax. One of our wholesale fruit and veg suppliers (top performer) makes less than 10% gross margin and it has to achieve monumental levels of volume for their net profits to hit the figures required to keep land maintained, reinvest in machinery, and comply with volumes of well meaning regulation! The IHT relief cap is a big blow, the land that will be sold will not got released quickly into housing nor will more solar farms help bring energy costs down and food prices will either go up or farms go bust! 𝗕𝘂𝘅𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 £𝟭𝟮𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬: 😍 Derbyshire brewer and retailer BUXTON BREWERY COMPANY LTD was acquired out of administration by local high-net-worth individual Jeremy Middleton, for a total consideration of £120,000, Propel has learned. Rick Harrison and Howard Smith, of Interpath Advisory, were appointed joint administrators to Buxton Brewery Company and Axe Edge Bars on 20 May 2024. Founded in 2009 and operating from a custom designed and built brewhouse in Buxton, Derbyshire, the business is a producer and retailer of craft ale, producing upwards of 30 distinct brews, with volumes of around 3,500 litres per brew, daily. Trading under the Buxton Brewery brand, it supplies several supermarkets and pub brands nationally, as well as exporting overseas. In addition, the group also operates four taprooms and bars located in Buxton, alongside a pop-up bottle shop and online store. Immediately following their appointment, the joint administrators sold certain of the business and assets of the group to Happy Place Investors, which is backed by Middleton, who lives locally to Buxton. Middleton is the former chief executive of Media Square and ex-chairman of Hangar Seven, which The Hut Group acquired in 2017. He was believed to be looking to inject equity into Buxton Brewery last year. Interpath received two offers for the business, with a rival bid to Middleton’s of £145,000 coming in from an unnamed party, which wished to acquire the business and assets of the brewery via a pre-packaged sale and the shares of Axe Edge Bars on a solvent basis. The administrators said that despite this offer having a higher headline price, with no insolvency of Axe Edge Bars, Middleton’s offer was considered to provide a greater return to creditors as a whole. The administrators report stated: “Subdued trading continued during the year to March 2023, which resulted in operating losses of circa £400,000 with a cash impact of circa £500,000. The business took on a Recovery Loan Scheme loan from Investec Asset Finance (£300,000) to support the company together with other short-term unsecured funding. However, cash flows remained constrained in part due to the increase in debt servicing costs. The business was unable to repay amounts due to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), which totalled circa £500,000 as per the most recent set of management accounts (January 2024). In December 2023, the director approached a number of the company’s lenders and asset finance providers in an attempt to secure the refinancing of existing liabilities. These efforts were unsuccessful, and as a result the business was unable to demonstrate the required future cash flows necessary for a Time to Pay agreement with HMRC to be agreed. In order to assess their options in view of the ongoing liquidity position, the directors therefore approached Interpath to explore the refinance and sale options for the group.”
