Nothing like trying to work on solidifying different skills, like #PowerBI, #PowerQuery and #DAX after seeing an increase in interest from where interest originally was maybe years ago when considering #Tableau vs #BI..... I remember hearing a while ago DAX was complex....only to find out its essentially #Excel functions and #operators....and pretty easy if you already have a predominant handle on #formulas in Excel already. I was also made aware this weekend of the potential issue organizations will face later this year as they'll need to migrate over to #Microsoft #Fabric by year's end, so I went ahead and grabbed a course on that this weekend as well. In the meantime, while this site is extremely rudimentary (and NOT live yet), but I'm trying to build a portfolio to demonstrate my skills and different projects demonstrating my skills in #data, #datascience and #dataengineering overall. It's just SUPER interesting and a bit of an eyeopener to see Power Query and DAX where WAY easier to understand than I thought they were going to be for the longest time. For the day 1, we went through: 👉 Getting data from 12 data sources both on prems and cloud sources. 👉 Different techniques to clean and transform data in the PQ. 👉 Understand and Manage Snowflake and Star Schema Relationships. 👉 Understand the importance of Primary and Foreign Keys in Dimension and Fact Tables. 👉 Understand and knowing when to use DAX Calculated Columns and DAX Measures. 👉Create Fiscal Period-based calendar dimension table using DAX Calculated Columns including chronological ordering of Month, Weekday and Fiscal Period. 👉 Author tons of explicit DAX Measures including Time Intelligence calculations to track KPI's. 👉 Data modelling best practices. I have lots of people ask me how to get started with Power BI - first thing I tell them is to learn data modelling and star schema's. With the date for the next UK General Election having been announced yesterday, I thought I'd have a look at what it would take to create an election results map using Power BI and the forthcoming Icon Map Pro. Well it turns out it's super easy! 📈 POWER BI JUNE 2024 - MY PICKS 📊 📁 1. I'm sure many have been waiting for this - Power BI enhanced report format (PBIR) is now available in the PBI Project file format (PBIP). This organises report elements into files/folders, improves the tracking of changes, and resolves merge conflicts issues by using properly formatted JSON. Will need to have more of a play with this! 🏗 2. You can now download and edit large semantic models as PBIX files in Power BI Desktop, enabling full editing of reports and models directly within the app. Surely there is a limitation to how big the PBIX can be? 📱 3. Not as big as the above two, however, we can now select’ Show Visuals as Table’ for Power BI Mobile. ◼️Dark Mode is now available in Power BI Desktop!◼️ The Power BI September 2024 Feature Summary has just been released today and there’s one special, long awaited and much requested feature which has been announced - Dark Mode! ◼️ This means users can now personalise their data visualisation experience to match their preferences and working environment. This is great if you prefer a darker interface or if you’re working late into the night. Dark mode replaces all the chrome around the design surface with white on black text, instead of black on white. This can reduce eye strain, enhance focus and some will find this more comfortable to look at than default mode. 🤔 How frustrating is it when presentation options are not consistent between different visualisations? So a very nice recent update in Qlik Sense Saas to ensure that all objects in the Visualisation and Dashboard Bundles now contain the consistent Presentation Styling properties available in all the existing standard viz. This styling includes: 🔠 Font styling of titles, 🌈 Background color and image options 🔲 Border and shadow settings Consistency makes everything so much easier, especially when combined with the handy Copy Style option. Nice change? Or (controversial) just reaching the level it should have been at from the beginning? P.S. If you're European, how do you feel about the whole s👈 vs 👉z situation when it comes to spelling vi(s/z)ualisation? I wrote this blog in 2016! 30th July 2016 - 8:30pm to be precise. I think I turned out to be right. 😉 I just stumbled across it while I've been refreshing some articles. It is easy to get started and automate tasks previously done in Excel and PowerPoint. Evolving Ecosystem - Microsoft is building an exciting ecosystem around Power BI, integrating it with other tools like Power Apps and Microsoft Flow to enhance business processes.
