Article 6 in Action: 86 Bilateral Agreements Transforming Climate Policy As we hit August 2024, the landscape of international climate efforts are picking up pace: 86 bilateral agreements have been formed under Article 6, covering 55 countries. An MoU was signed just this week between Sweden and Zambia. 🔗 Notable agreements include: 🔸 Ghana and Switzerland: Working together on sustainable rice cultivation and integrated waste recycling. 🔸 Thailand and Switzerland: Pioneering the Bangkok E-Bus Program, which achieved the first recognized transfer of carbon credits. 🔸 Japan and Vietnam: Collaborating on renewable energy initiatives through the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM). 🔸 Peru and Switzerland: Advancing reforestation and forest management for both biodiversity and carbon capture. These agreements are a promising start, but there's still a long way to go. The legislation isn’t complete, and we’re still only seeing a handful of developed nations actually buying. Check out the S&P flow diagram below showing Article 6.2 agreements, MoUs and letters of intent. You’ll notice it’s really just a handful of developed countries buying from a range of primarily developing nations. So, where are the rest of the developed countries? Broader participation is crucial. We need more engagement to scale these efforts and unlock the full potential of the global carbon market. The clock's ticking, and more action is needed. Venture capital's wild ride - my article for this month's Business Brief magazine. - 2021's soaring public market valuations sparked a major VC boom, significantly boosting fund services in the Channel Islands. - VCs rushed to invest in high-growth startups, amidst a surge in IPOs, and driving record levels of capital into the venture space. -The post-pandemic reversal, with rising inflation and interest rates, abruptly ended the boom, slashing valuations and stalling the IPO market. - Venture funds found themselves holding devalued portfolios, leading to poor returns and making fundraising difficult for many. - The Channel Islands' fund services sector has slowed, and weaker funds are likely to merge or wind down. - However, the rise of AI presents new investment opportunities, and the Channel Islands are well positioned to support the next phase of VC growth. Finally, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (#CCPA) introduced guidelines that restricted the use of terms like ‘#natural’, ‘#sustainable’, or ‘#ecofriendly’ without proof in advertisements unless backed by scientific evidence or third-party certification, aiming to promote transparency. , misleading consumers and undermining genuine sustainability efforts. As environmental awareness grows, This move is correct, so do misleading claims that exploit our drive for eco-friendly choices. This deceptive practice, known as #greenwashing, happens when companies market products or services as "#green" without natural substance behind their claims. 🔎 Greenwashing tricks consumers into believing they’re making environmentally responsible choices. Whether through vague labels, selective disclosures, or nature-themed branding, companies aim to appear eco-friendly while often failing to enact genuine sustainability practices. Its very important to spot it and not get carried away by just labels or words used. Here is a short guideline to spot it 💡 How to Spot Greenwashing: Misleading Labels: Look for trusted certifications, not just "eco-friendly" tags. Hidden Trade-Offs: Question claims that only highlight one positive while hiding others. Vague Terminology: Terms like "green" or "natural" are often too broad without specifics. The Intricate Tango: How Mentors Cultivate Startup-Investor Harmony Imagine a #startup and an #investor as partners in a complex tango. It starts with a delicate introduction, progresses through intricate moves, and can blossom into a long-term partnership. Yet, occasional clashes are inevitable. To navigate funding rounds, manage ownership dilution, and stay aligned on core values, #trust is paramount. This is where a skilled #mentor steps in, acting as a maestro of trust and collaboration. A good mentor provides #founders with a much-needed reality check. They guide them through the value creation process, from achieving that elusive product-market fit to managing R&D and intellectual property. Their deep understanding of the entrepreneurial rollercoaster allows them to effectively evaluate and present the startup's potential to investors. Unlike founders, who are often passionately invested and juggling personal commitments, a mentor offers an objective perspective. They can candidly discuss the investment opportunity, highlighting risks alongside strengths and weaknesses. This objectivity paves the way for more productive and successful meetings between founders and #investors. But a mentor's role doesn't end with securing funding.
