'Innovating to minimise waste' As part of the PCF Sustainability Report, Food Drink Ireland is proud to work with member company Hilton Foods Hilton Foods Ireland has a long track record of partnership and innovation to address sustainability challenges. They have delivered a 54% reduction in the volume of Category 3 waste (waste derived from by-products that are fit for human consumption but not consumed by humans e.g. hooves, skin, bristles, feathers) over the 2020-2022 period. By the end of 2023, some 86% of this target had been achieved through a number of initiatives, including enhanced stock management procedures, additional collection points for any excess product, balancing production to longer runs and partnership with Food Cloud. Hilton Foods Ireland has made significant progress in reducing packaging waste, with data for 2022 some 40% lower than 2018. 🚀 The plan, according to Mars, is to grow Kellanova's brands further... M&M's and Snickers maker Mars said on Wednesday that it would be acquiring snack food business Kellanova. 📌 Highlights: This would mark a multibillion-dollar agreement set to result in a new industry giant. The announcement comes at a time when consumers already feel the squeeze from rising costs of living. "In welcoming Kellanova's portfolio of growing global brands, we have a substantial opportunity for Mars to further develop a sustainable snacking business that is fit for the future," said Mars chief executive Poul Weihrauch in a statement. This acquisition of Kellanova unlocks a significant opportunity for Mars to meaningfully compete with iconic brands in the growing category of salty snacks. The combined portfolio would also be suited to meet demand in fast-growing markets such as Africa and Latin America. The deal, is anticipated to close in the first half of 2025. Some interesting news in the #food and #drinks industry this week: 1. Ready-to-drink coffee has become overly reliant on promotions to drive sales, according to the CEO of London challenger brand Grind | Certified B Corp. Speaking to The Grocer, David Abrahamovitch said competition between leading RTD brands such as Starbucks and Costa Coffee was putting downward pressure on pricing, and suppliers needed to offer higher quality products to “encourage consumers to trade up” and preserve value in the category. 2. pladis Global has promoted Emily Stuart to head of innovation for the UK & Ireland. With 13 years’ in fmcg experience. Emily started out as a buyer for Tesco and has held numerous commercial, strategy and category roles for General Mills and PepsiCo. 3. According to Future Market Insights (FMI), the spice oils and oleoresins market is expected to record a CAGR of 7.9% between 2023 and 2033. Oleoresins are used to create aromas, fragrances, and various cosmetic items. They are utilised in the pharmaceutical sector with multiple uses such as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and other medication, thus expecting to drive growth along with the expanding consumption of organic food making spice oils popular in the market. 4.  The Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) has called on the new government to put the wine and spirits trade at the centre of its programme for growth. They said “urgent action” needs to be taken to halt “unnecessary changes” to taxing wine in February 2025, and to “clear up” confusion over waste packaging regulations. 5. Morrisons has launched a limited-edition heritage butter packaging design to mark its 125 years as a business. The anniversary product is a nod to how the company started as an egg and butter market stall in Bradford. Will Carlsberg’s proposed merger with Britvic be approved by the Competition and Markets Authority? With popular soft drink brands like Pepsi, Fruit Shoot, and Tango already part of Britvic's portfolio in the UK, the Carlsberg Group is poised to become a major contender in the soft drink market, capturing a market share equivalent to 68% of Coca-Cola's. Our data indicates that there is minimal overlap between Carlsberg Group and Britvic, both in terms of the categories of drink brands within their respective portfolios and the demographics of their consumer bases. Acquiring Britvic will position Carlsberg as a significant player in the UK soft drinks market. The Government is reviewing the Soft Drinks Industry Levy's (SDIL) operation and structures, with a view to further drive down the sugar content in soft drinks. They are looking at whether to remove the current exemptions for milk-based and MILK SUBSTITUTE DRINKS. Some companies producing dairy alternatives may think they won't be captured but the Government will also be considering changes to the sugar content thresholds at which the SDIL applies. This could end with a tax on your products and we need to be clear on what that means for our sector and businesses within it. Every restaurant leaks profitability — it’s simply a question of where and how much... Many chains have already done their level best in managing the business through challenges and pressures on their P&L (and their private equity investors have already harvested the low-hanging fruit identified in pre-investment due diligence). But once the obvious cost-cutting and trimming of the fat has been rendered, the margin yield is often still not enough to prop-up same-store sales declines. Challenges to the business must be overcome with fresh solutions that are more creative, innovative, bold, and inspired than the conditions that fostered them.
