Are UK electric vehicle sales on track to meet the rising ZEV Mandate targets? Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that BEV sales surpassed the 22% mandate for the first time in August, making up 22.6% of new car sales. However, while this is a positive step, overall BEV sales in 2024 remain below the target. Had a great first day yesterday at the FT Live Future of the Car event! 🚗 My key take aways from day one include … 🔌 Everyone’s Talking About EVs!: It’s clear the shift from ICE to EVs is speeding up, but not without challenges. EVs are now more accessible than ever but more needs to be done to achieve the UK government targets. 🤝 Strategic Partnerships Are Key: The importance of collaboration between OEMs, tech firms and other industry players was a major theme and these partnerships will ensure we can meet the demands of modern consumers. From EV battery solutions to the integration of advanced technologies, AI and connected services - the ability to draw upon expertise in these areas will support a truly tech-driven car. 🌏 Chinese Entrants Are Changing The Game: The event highlighted the competitive threat that Chinese manufacturers bring with more competitively priced vehicles. Not only do European manufacturers need to innovate faster, they need to consider incentives to make their range more competitive to EV consumers. 🔄 A Shift From Ownership to Usership: The car ownership model is evolving, but it’s not as black and white as full ownership vs pay-to-drive propositions. More people are opting for flexible usership, including short-term leases and full-service packages, reflecting a major change in how we think about mobility. 📈 Flexibility In Policy Is Needed: Despite a clear direction of travel from the UK government, many of yesterday’s talks highlighted the need for flexible policies and responsive strategies to adapt to these rapid changes and make it work for everyone. As news is released today that the UK is out of recession it's also good to read about our home-grown automotive sector doing well with new car registrations up again for the 21st consecutive month. However, the challenge is still on to find the right incentives to encourage the purchase of BEV's for both domestic and commercial customers/vehicles. We are also still significantly challenged by the limited charging infrastructure which is hindering in particular the uptake of EV's in the commercial vehicle market. Our Market View identifies how the average price of a used car increased in April for the first time this year, following a succession of monthly dips. Prices averaged £16,964, a month-on-month rise of 1% (or £146), but down 9% year-on-year from £18,564. The annual party conference season moved to Liverpool this week as the Labour Party hosted its first as the party of power since 2009. We were pleased to meet with new and senior politicians to discuss how the UK automotive industry can support the national growth agenda and the country’s net zero ambitions. Central to that agenda is an industrial strategy, to which Labour has already committed, and which was fleshed out with some detail on the Apprenticeship Levy, energy market reform and Great British Energy, but it is the promised green paper we await which should provide more detail of structure and policy. From trade and decarbonisation to infrastructure and skills, automotive can be a massive driver of change. But businesses need certainty over policymaking and dialogue so we used our annual Labour conference lunch to set out to senior MPs and Ministers the priorities automotive businesses need. Automotive is committed to working with government, with all parties, and, indeed, other industries to deliver growth, but there is an increasing sense of urgency if our shared ambitions are to be achieved.
