City Funds is a place-based impact fund that uses its funds and aligned grants to strengthen organisations solving some of the biggest problems facing Bristol.  Aligned with the One City Plan, City Funds adopts a One City approach bringing together the public and private sectors, mixing investment, grant-funding and pro bono support to make Bristol a fair, healthy and sustainable city. The fund, which was established five years ago as a collaboration of Quartet Community Foundation, Bristol & Bath Regional Capital and Bristol City Council, has been evaluated by The Good Economy.    This evaluation looked at the successes of the fund and what can be learned from the process of setting it up. It found that City Funds has a unique governance structure that bridges the local authority and private investment to tackle inequality and city-wide issues. The final report includes an evaluation of the impact in terms of tackling inequality and what lessons can be brought forward to new funds, with a focus on the scalability of the fund, particularly in the context of the new Western Net Zero Accelerator Fund that Bristol & Bath Regional Capital is working on establishing and how the model can be transformed for a regional scale. Plans for Redditch’s new Community Hub are to change, after Redditch Borough Council’s Executive Committee voted to withdraw an invitation to Redditch Library to move into it. The decision at last night’s (July 29) Executive meeting means the borough council will now work on bringing other tenants into the town’s developing multi-agency hub at a transforming Redditch Town Hall. Council Leader, Cllr Joe Baker, said: “After working on this issue for two years as a key campaign pledge, and after the people of Redditch gave us a resounding mandate through the ballot box in May’s election, we can finally say that we have stopped the move that would have led to the demolition of the library. We can now get on with a more suitable community hub.” The council will now formally notify Worcestershire County Council, the owner and operator of Redditch Library and its current building, of the decision, and work on new hub plans. It also means the council will now work with the Redditch Town Deal Board and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government to determine the most effective alternative use for the £4m of Towns Fund money previously approved for the redevelopment of the library site. Cllr Baker added: “We want to see the Towns Fund money used to boost Redditch, not demolish a much-used community asset. Those conversations are already happening, and we look forward to working with all parties on a resolution that benefits Redditch.” New reports on revised hub plans and the Towns Fund money are now expected before the council’s Executive Committee in September.

Our latest Flourish graph shows there has been a changing landscape of ICB geographies with high waiting lists. More recently, we know that the Midlands and London regionally have more, but at ICB level the North is consistently high along with the capital. This could be due to population sizes of ICBs - however, more work is needed to understand if the variation in size is meaningful and requires additional investment. Last week we partnered with the LCR Civic Data Cooperative to host their Greater Data event, bringing together a range of people and organisations to think about how we create a new roadmap for civic data and public services in the Liverpool City Region 🔓🚀 . We were joined by Rachel Coldicutt who shared powerful and inspiring insights, Rob Tabb and a brilliant panel made up of Gary Leeming, Kate Downes and Andrew Malone (moderated by our very own Emma Lord). Here on the Digital & Technology stage at The #HousingCommunitySummit - 'Digital Transformation in Practice' sponsored by Switchee Chaired by Michael Appleby, Altair We kick things off with a refreshing account from John Keegan, Chief Exec of Monmouthshire Housing Association on the digital transformation journey - which began in 2016 - when the cloud based system they needed didn’t really exist. In his experience when bringing on a new tech supplier, housing is a very limited market. Be wary of the ‘demo’ - often the only version of the software that works. It’s important when procuring a new software that there is proper reference sites. John talks about a move an away from the often daunting terminology of ‘transformation’ and instead takes an ‘evolution’ approach. Key to the journey and getting things right is the ability to swallow one’s pride and to get buy-in from the staff and board alike. Emma Blackmore from Data insights specialists, iOpt follows with an interesting account of their IOT and AI solutions for social housing - taking landlords from a reactive to a proactive approach with predictive analytics. Drawing upon the issue of fuel poverty, Emma takes us through how the iOpt app provides: Predictive analytics  Dynamic threshold setting Anomaly detection Image recognition and anaylsis Time-lapse deterioration tracking  Smart energy usage insights Dominika Phillips-Blackburn, Mobysoft, very much agrees with John’s reimagining of ‘digital transformation’ to ‘business evolution’ and begins her presentation by emphasising that digital tools need to be tailored around resident and staff needs. Mobysoft have built a machine learning model based on customer data to predict tenants at high risk of going into arrears with their rent payments. This has required balancing tech with a human touch, after all; AI automates, humans empathise. In addition to the significant cost and time savings achieved by Mobysoft’s #RentSense product, Dominika also shares the work they do to ensure digital inclusion, transparency and avoid bias. Her key recommendation when it comes to starting the ‘evolution’ journey. Start small and build on it. Finally, Sean L., Director of Insight and Transformation at North Star Housing Group, takes to the stage to share how North Star have successfully moved from their traditional housing managment system to Microsoft dynamics. Key for Sean (in addition to echoing John’s points around getting staff and board buy-in) was doing it modular and being flexible to change the process to match the software. Starting with an area that would guarantee to get buy in from staff - which in this case was logging repairs complaints. Having diversity of thought in the room is also important and collaborating with out of sector partners such as the National Innovation Centre, Univeristy of York and National Robotarium have been very useful but also great fun! #ukhousing #socialhousing
