In the recent King’s Speech, the UK government outlined its agenda, with significant focus on the data management space, signaling a transformative direction for digital and data management. This legislative program includes several significant elements that align closely with the themes that have influenced my career in data management. A couple of things that stood out for me: 1️⃣ One key initiative is the establishment of digital verification services. These services are set to streamline and secure processes like identity verification, enhancing user experience and trust. It’s promising to see advancements here, especially considering my recent positive experience using a digital identity app without any hiccups. Dan Johnson, I’m looking forward to your insights on this development as it progresses. 2️⃣ Moreover, the government plans to modernise the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). Hopefully, this modernisation will help maintain the high standards of data protection we expect in the UK. I’d love to hear your thoughts on these initiatives. I attended the event "AI + Intelligent Automation Panel Discussion" in London today hosted by Edge Tech (thank you for the invite Izzy!). The panel was great - made up of Nikki North, Phil Pentland, Hema Gandhi & Lorenzo Laurelli - with interesting, engaging discussions relating to ROI from automation, challenges with implementation and trends within the industry. < Begin Rant> I am compelled to have a mini-rant. I swear the next time someone states that AI "has been around for 2 years" I will scream. I really enjoyed the panel discussion - but in networking afterwards I was struck by how many people who were new to the industry talked about AI in terms of it being "a few years old". AI is not new:  - it wasn't new in 1995 when William Scott, Celeste McCracken and I were building machine learning models (ie linear regression) to predict house prices  - it wasn't new in 1996 when I was building image processing models to support forestry valuation models with Brigid Duffield  - it wasn't new in 1998 when I used ARIMA (Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average) to build forecasting models for health expenditure with Mani Maniparathy  - it wasn't new in 2000 when Julia Dol, Susie Stone and I implemented mediation and billing systems at TelstraClear that used machine learning models for fraud and anomaly detection  - it wasn't new in 2010 when Brady Ivimey and I helped to implement Yahoo email filters (using spam detection - aka classification systems) into Telecom It's great if you arrive 30 years late to the party - but don't spend your time telling me how well you know the host when you met them last week. < End Rant > The advancements in AI and LLMs over the past few years have been wonderful, and by embracing AI's rich history we will be well positioned to help realise many of the benefits it promises. Let's continue to learn and innovate together - but let's ease up on the "AI-splaining". #AI #automation

“The amount of fraud committed in the UK more than doubled to £2.3bn in 2023, marking the second-biggest year for scams in the last two decades,” said Erin Nicholson, global head of data protection and privacy at Thoughtworks. “Ever since Big Tech, fintechs and other incumbents have shifted towards a more digital and data-driven approach to customer experience, the payments space has emerged as one of the most vulnerable to fraudsters. “Analysis of this data shows not only a growth in fraud rates, but the amounts involved are getting bigger too. With rising access to AI-powered tools, the sad reality is that fraudsters are becoming increasingly advanced to stay one step ahead of those trying to catch them. The Bank of England and Financial Conduct Authority has done a survey on AI in UK Financial Services The BoE and FCA have conducted a third-party survey of Financial Services and Machine Learning in the UK Finance Sector. Key stats are: 1. 73% firms are using AI. 2. ⁠Foundation models form 17% of all AI use cases. 3. ⁠33% of AI use cases are third-party implementations. 4. ⁠55% of all AI use cases have some degree of automated decision-making. 5. ⁠62% of all AI use cases are rated low materiality. 6. ⁠46% respondents reported having a ‘partial understanding’ of AI technologies. It was great to share my thoughts today on the topic of "Challenges and trends facing customer firms". It was interesting to hear how far we have come with data democratisation and data discoverability. An area of expertise that I got to share was focus on cost savings initiatives that must be weighed up against new product development, business opportunities and staying competitive. I also discussed my focus on people talent, so our business becomes more effective. My teams are given ownership and through diverse thought and t-shaped skill sets, we get amazing team performance. My aim was to give different perspective and highlight other areas of savings than traditional ones. Thank you to my esteemed panellists Conrad Ball, Letitia Matthews and Steve Cheng.
