Varnika Chawla was delighted to participate in a panel discussion at the IETA European Climate Summit 2024 earlier today speaking on “A way forward for UK ETS”. The panelists provided an overview of UK policy changes and the UK Government’s plans on the future of the UK ETS, market fundamentals that affect price outlook, introduction on a Supply Adjustment Mechanism and the plan to integrate Greenhouse Gas Removals into the ETS. The discussion ended with thoughts on the implications of European Union’s CBAM on the UK ETS and more broadly looking at a linkage between the UK ETS and the EU ETS. The discussion on the inclusion of #NatureBasedSolutions into GGRs as part of the UK ETS was a highlight for Climate Asset Management. The panel, which was expertly moderated by Victoria H. of Argus Media, included Raúl C. FDTA Proposal Update From WatersTechnology.com: Nine US regulators—including the Federal Reserve System, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission—proposed to require the use of the FIGI securities identifier in financial reporting to government agencies. The move comes among other proposed rules as part of the Financial Data Transparency Act (FDTA), which seeks to establish the use of open-license and machine-readable data standards in communications between regulators and financial institutions. FIGI was developed in collaboration with the OMG. OMG plays a crucial role in the FDTA by helping to develop and promote the machine-readable data standards required by the legislation. Forthcoming Coalition Greenwich (a division of CRISIL) research, conducted in collaboration with Axoni, revealed significant challenges in data sharing within capital markets. Given the widespread reliance on legacy methods such as email and SFTP for sharing critical trade and post-trade data, 90% of Tier 1 firms reported that batch processes are problematic, citing inefficiencies and operational risks. In Europe, the expansion of emissions trading schemes to more public-facing sectors such as transport, buildings, and waste incineration will soon bring people face-to-face with the cost of decarbonisation. In the UK, the addition of waste to the ETS from 2028 risks saddling cash-strapped local councils, and council tax payers, with as much as £75 million-£1 billion in costs for emissions from their treatment and incineration of household rubbish.
