Aspirational Rural India A Kaleidoscope of Interdependence, Growth and Prosperity. In the heart of rural India lies a wellspring of potential, a community deeply rooted in its local identity and tradition yet eager to embrace the winds of change.The conventional narratives of rural India are depicted merely as recipients of aid or beneficiaries of urban progress which no longer hold true. Today it is important to recognise the innate strength, wisdom, resilience and the aspirations that these communities possess. Rural India is not just an isolated entity but an integral part of a larger ecosystem, where the success of one is inextricably linked to the wellbeing of all. Empowering Through Collaboration I have had the good fortune of establishing, heading and running the Usha Silai School program of Usha International for a decade. We worked in rural interiors across 29 states and all the Union Territories in the country. Directly and indirectly, when I moved on from Usha we had established about 30000 Silai schools and trained approximately 6/7 lakh rural women. It taught me the importance of collaboration—between government, private sector, and rural communities themselves. A model of development that is participatory is crucial, where the voices of rural India are not only heard but are instrumental in shaping the policies and programs that affect them. This approach ensures that development is sustainable, as it is built on a foundation of local knowledge and ownership. There is a need to create opportunities for rural India that align with their cultural values and strengths. Whether it’s through promoting sustainable agriculture, technical skilling, enhancing educational opportunities, or fostering entrepreneurship. ENTREPRENEURSHIP IS Key with the goal its to empower rural communities to become self-reliant, yet connected to the broader economic and social fabric of the country. A Future of Shared Prosperity In the aspirational rural India of present times I envision, prosperity is not a zero-sum game. It is a shared journey, where progress even in rural interiors contributes to the overall growth of the nation. This challenges us to rethink our approach to development, urging us to see rural India not as a problem to be solved, but as an equal partner in building a better future for all.

This powerful quote from Kalvakuntla Taraka Rama Rao / KTR, the former Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development, Industries and Commerce, and IT of Telangana, struck a chord with me during the World Earth Day event for Urban Management - ASCI. While team OneDigiStore was covering the event, we had the opportunity to take a video byte from him. He glanced at the pre-defined narrative for just 10 seconds and delivered it flawlessly in a single take. EY India is working with the International Solar Alliance (ISA) as a Strategic PMU to drive the global solar energy agenda across its 100 plus member countries. EY’s is supporting ISA to help set up demonstration projects, open markets, build investment pipeline, drive technological advancements, and strengthen global collaboration in the solar sector of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) with a sharp focus on Africa, where solar energy is still at a nascent stage. EY India has also assisted ISA in reviewing the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) policy and develop the MEL frame for ISA’s ongoing program period. Our joint annual publication, "Ease of Doing Solar" report, provides update on solar sector progress across each member country and identifies actionable insights to enhance solar deployment. Lingerie of Longevity??? Prof Deepak Saini has a very apt first name: Deepak. He is lighting the दीपक of Longevity Studies at IISc Bangalore. Prof Deepak has received a funding of 100 Crores to kick start the research at the Institute. Interestingly IISc is itself is now 115 years old . Equally intersesting is that in our country, Yogis and Rishis supposedly live well beyond 100 years . So in a way we already know the secret of Long and Healthy Life , do we ??? ++×+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ As always happens , the interest in this field is sparked from the West . Some of leading luminaries in this field are shown in the Photo below: Dr Peter Attia to Mark Hyman. Some key factors identified so far: 1) Getting up early to take in Morning Sunlight (सुर्य को अर्घ्य देना already in our Culture) 2) Intermittent Fasting (व्रत-उपवास already in our Culture) 3) No Sugar , Meat - For the first time Non Vegetarian food has been called out as bad for Longevity by David Sinclair ( see the photo on right ) 4) Walking or any form of Exercise (Everyone knows but few do and few OVER-DO) 5) Having Healthy Social Relationships- This is difficult 6) Good Sleep- This is also difficult (70 Hours we are being told to work in a week ) 7) Some strange practices - Ice Baths , Injecting plasma of Younger People, Talking Supplements like Rapamycin , Resveratrol , Snake Oils etc. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Human life span as of now is pegged at 120 years which means 60 more years after retirement. How will we Indians fund this additional 60 years if we start following the Longevity Practices. Then there is Terror-ism, Wars, Climate Changes , Laboratory Outbreak of Viruses etc .How will the 100 crore funding help on mitigating these life shortening threats. We need to take a backseat and respect the Air , Water, Soil and the Life Forms that subsist amongst us. A Healthy body needs Healthy Environment and Pure Natural Habitats. Is all this possible??? I visited them in 1993 and later supported their Dharani initiative when it started in the mid 2000s. The Dharani initiative now works with 2072 smallholder farmers from 70 villages spread across 10 mandals of Sri Sathya Sai and Ananthapuramu Districts. It promotes sustainable and climate-resilient organic farming and works for better returns to smallholder farmers by gaining increased control over the agricultural value chain. These farmers cultivate diverse food crops such as millets, groundnut, lentils, etc. Under this initiative, Dharani Farming and Marketing Cooperative Ltd/Dharani FaM Coop has been promoted as a member-owned business enterprise of smallholder farmers. For the longest time, India has seen its villages as the source code for home and belonging. Almost anyone you speak to in any city in the country belongs somewhere else. A "native place", a "yahan <insert name> ke hain". There is always something lacking - and in recent times, a growing sense of frustration amongst citizens with life in the city. As Santosh Nargund's excellent article highlights, without decentralisation and empowerment at the local level - adequate infrastructure, accessible and dependable essential services, and the guarantee of quality of life for all will remain unfulfilled dreams. It is easy to blame the local departments for their inadequacies. It is much harder for urban residents to accept that these local governments need basic resources, State support and true autonomy, to make our cities what they need to be - inclusive, accessible and prepared for a rapidly transforming future. Perhaps we should ask for more of this as industry, RWAs and Housing Co-operatives, engaging with local representatives more and seeing how a ground-swell of support might help shift the momentum. #PeopleFirstCities #ParticipatoryGovernance #SustainableDevelopment
