I don't go in for 'building in public' in general, but every now and then I think it's worth sharing what I'm seeing in the market. The below graph shows the average time to close a deal over time at EmergeOne and you can see that this has been creeping up since last year (adjusted for seasonality) and is currently close to 3 months to close a deal. So what's happening? Well, I was recently at an CFO event where we got a bit of a data driven view into the state of private markets. Some key points that came out: 🏷️ Median post money at Series A has dropped from 80m USD in 21/22 to 65m USD in 2024. This is still up from 40m from circa 2020. ％ Top quartile is significantly over at 107m. 📈 Series B median post money is $137m, top quartile $287m USD, but bottom quartile significantly struggling. 🚀 Deal velocity has slowed but started recovering. 💰 Lots of deals are happening but not priced - bridges abound. So how does this therefore relate to what we're seeing in terms of time to close? Firstly, we are a consultancy providing fractional CFO support to venture backed tech startups typically post Seed and pre Series A so this data reflects what we are generally seeing in the market as well. But the two main issues that are seemingly impacting our numbers are around deal velocity and bridge financing. There are simply fewer deals being done and they are taking longer to close, so the volume of potential clients we can target has dropped significantly. This does, however, mean that the quality of deals we're working on is significantly higher this year. Secondly, as companies struggle to raise priced rounds, they are raising lower amounts of capital on convertibles. This impacts us as CFOs are only truly valuable when there is a significant balance sheet to manage, less capital = less need for CFOs and hence the decision as to when to bring us in gets pushed out. But equally, that insecurity over funds means that founders are much more hesitant to make significant hiring decisions, prioritising hires that can directly influence revenue / traction in the near term. But they also know that they need the support so are often waiting for the 'magic moment' where they hit an inflection point that gives them confidence to pull the trigger. Outside of the deal data, we are also seeing venture indexing towards more R&D heavy businesses (life science, hardware etc.) and these sort of companies are often not commercialising for several years. They have security over spend and regard finance as a future problem. We are seeing a lot of companies approaching Series B without anyone in finance, deferring that decision till they close. But we are also seeing leads come through from a multitude of sources proving there is appetite for strong commercially minded CFOs to support and grow these scaling businesses. So as the market stabilises, I would expect to see these numbers come back. Business wouldn't be any fun if it was all easy, would it?!

We’ve been on the CAC rollercoaster - and it’s not a ride you want to experience. Keeping it in check is daunting, but only if you don’t have the right approach. Here’s how we consistently manage our CAC while scaling at Obvi: Initially, we leaned heavily on just one platform for most of our ads - Meta. If you’ve been paying attention for the last couple of months then you know that’s not the best idea, but back in 2021, Meta was PRINTING on all fronts Then came IOS 14.5, and in less time than you can say “We’re f*cked”... Our CAC went from $30 to $93 And monthly adspend dropped from $600k to $250k. Personally, I wanted Obvi to exist in a year - and that meant that we needed to go back to square 1 and optimize every single aspect of our existing funnels. - Relearning how to make better creatives that convert - Completely reworking our landing pages, product pages, etc. - Ruthlessly testing new offers Our goal was to make every single interaction with us as valuable as the last. Meta will always have its good days and bad days and that holds true even recently. We saw the only sustainable solution was to give our entire process a deep renovation. But The #1 biggest lesson I learned from all this - good marketing is NEVER cut and dry. Ensuring the survival and growth of your business means you need to get scrappy (And become an amateur psychologist)  So - start using every resource available to you. Here’s what I recommend: 1. Know Thy Enemy Leverage platforms that can give you data, insights, and strategies for both you and your biggest competitors. There isn’t a single professional athlete who doesn’t step onto the field without watching film, so neither should you. 2. Become Your Customer I don’t mean this literally - but you can start buying your own products if you want. Go nuts. What I mean is start a community, interact with your customers. get yourself into your own funnel and scroll mindfully, etc. If you can understand your audience on a personal level, then everything you do on the marketing end will reflect it. 3. Leverage Multiple Marketing Channels Paid Media, Affiliate Marketing, Pop up stores at a farmers market - whatever. When you really start to diversify your marketing, 2 things happen: - Your risk of getting screwed if something goes wrong goes way down - Your target audience starts to see you EVERYWHERE Both are ideal, and both will contribute 1000% to the sustainable growth of your brand. Everything I said above we have done, and every single one has helped us to grow Obvi to where it is today. The world of DTC is constantly changing, and your best bet will be to innovate, build genuine relationships, and work to stay AHEAD of the curve.

#Manchester based past SkilledUp Life tech startup customer Cytix raises £1.6 million Seed investment from Manchester based Praetura Ventures founded by David Foreman. Michael Rees well done. Limited Partner (LP) in this case is Northern Powerhouse Fund II operated by British Business Bank British Business Bank North of England Delyth Lloyd Edwards. Simon Cunnington SkilledUp Life helped Thomas Ballin and the team during the earliest stages of the tech startup when they were self-funded and bootstrapping. I also had the pleasure to mingle with Ben Armstrong at Techcelerate when they were just starting up and trying to build the first version of the product. Both Ben and Thomas stood up as a strong pair of co-founders. They came from the same industry, worked for the same boss and knew the market inside out. They knew how to innovate the market and slice a portion of the market for themselves. They also had a superb unfair advantage in addition to above. The pair was perfect to start a tech product company. Let me explain why. When you talk about building tech startups, especially at the very earliest stages, you need to two people: - Some one who can code and build - Thomas Ballin - Some one who can sell - Ben Armstrong Having been in the tech startup world for 20 years, I rarely see this ideal combination. I knew they would go places. And they had. A massive congratulations from me to Thomas, Ben and the team. ⏰There is a Tick Tock pulse in fundraising and sales⏱️ If Tick is fundraising, Tock is sales. ❌ The problem is most founders go Tick Tick Tick > Tock Tock Tock ❗️Now the next Tick will be much harder because your valuation has now priced in all that past revenue (fair) but without a clear line of sight to future revenues that drive venture-scale growth. 🕥This can prolong the fundraising process as investors wait to see your next batch of contracts come in. 💡One solution is to fundraise after signing a contract but before servicing it. In other words, pre-A/B rounds. It’s a short window but this is the Tick Tock pulse that works incredibly well if you get it right. Here’s the narrative: 1️⃣We have $x in signed contracts and will have to service them over the next 12 months 2️⃣We’re raising now so we can focus on pleasing our customers when the time comes. 3️⃣For this peace of mind, we’re willing to take a 20% discount on our next round valuation given the contracts are already signed. 4️⃣Of course, you are welcomed to join after we’ve closed the revenues. We might be raising at 20% discount to the following round by then. 💡As an added benefit, founders get to focus on one thing at a time - fundraising > sales > fundraising > sales (Tick Tock Tick Tock!) ➡️As with most things I share, works for B2B deep tech. I think? 🧐 💸Don’t try this at home (consumer tech).

I consider myself lucky—I've worn the shoes of founders and donned the VC hat as well. Attending pitching events was part of my weekly routine in both cases. However, I've never experienced anything quite like what the Pitchflix team and Shane Smith delivered at Level39. rev London was a truly disruptive event for the #venturecapital industry. Instead of the traditional format where founders pitch to investors, this time accelerators and VCs took the stage to explain to founders why they should choose them. It was a true "think outside the box" approach, and I deeply admire it. This is precisely what the ecosystem needs to catch up with Silicon Valley. Beyond the fantastic #networking opportunities, the session fostered real and frank conversations between parties that are typically represented in opposite roles. One thing everyone seemed to agree on: "investors invest in people." That's why ETA Technologies' presence was invaluable. 🔮 The quality of emerging managers will INCREASE in the next two vintages Being a GP at a large VC is frustrating. Deals sourced no longer have significant impact at mega-funds, leaving limited control over upside Carry gets blended across the partnership. The best pickers will move on The best three VC vintages in the last 25 years came in the three years after the GFC - 80% of those returns came from emerging managers. 2024 to 2026 can be a repeat 🐠 LP money is gravitating towards established funds right now, the exact opposite direction it should be heading. Team Supercritical has been hard at work over the last month building our marketplace for today’s launch 🚀 For the first time ever, buyers can access live pricing and availability data for projects covering 80%+ of global biochar supply. All projects onboarded onto our marketplace must pass our strict 118-point vetting protocol, including all the CDR usuals (additionality, leakage, permanence, LCA etc.) as well as broader environmental impact, social impact, and delivery risk. 80% of the projects we review fail. And the 15+ page vetting reports are available for any buyer to read. When I speak to overworked sustainability teams trying to buy CDR, I hear the same problems over and over: ♦ “I need 20,000 tonnes, this year for my 2023 emissions. Is this available? How do I know?” ♦ “I ran an RFP. It took 6 months, a ton of back & forth with suppliers, and by the time I selected my shortlist, I learned the tonnes were gone. The data was rapidly out of date and all that work was for nothing.” At Songkick, my last company, we built the world’s most comprehensive database of 100,000+ upcoming concerts in the world, aggregating over 100 data sources to make sure fans never missed a show. What does Beyoncé have to do with biochar? A quote from a recent StepStone Group report on VC vintages around the concept of a “Vintage Power Law” is very interesting and highlights a point I often talk about. I’ve added the report in the comments. "Put differently, of the 23 vintage years assessed, 80% of returns come from just five to seven separate vintage years over the short, medium, and long term. Furthermore, 95% of returns come from six to ten of the 23 vintages measured over each time frame." Of course, investors won’t know which vintage years are power law until 7-10 years+ later. I often get the question of whether Venture Capital is a good asset class to invest in or not. The truth is that it depends. Unlike other asset classes, the magnitude of return dispersion in VC in massive. Benjamin Sun from Primary Venture Partners recently shared that the median seed fund returns of the last two decades were found (using a data set from a longstanding VC FoF) to be ~7% while mean returns were 50% (!). In other words, VC can be either a terrible asset class (as it is for many) or an incredible one. Putting aside strategic interests, this is speaking purely in financial terms. While a 50% return should never be expected (and presumably the FoF had great access and selection), it does mean that VC can be interesting only if done programmatically, which typically requires 1) Great manager selection and access 2) Consistency across cycles. The second point means that LPs typically need be committed long term across cycles and vintages --- as the Stepstone report highlighted (and be fairly consistent on deployments annually --- This does not mean the same amount each year, but variations should probably not be more than a single standard deviation or so). Unfortunately, looking at the data, it’s clear that many LPs go in heavy when times are the hottest (i.e. 2019-2021) and then retract completely during tougher times. This is primarily (not solely) a natural function of ingrained investor psychology. The problem of course is that peak times bring suboptimal outcomes due to behavioral changes (and the inclusion of tourists). It’s hard to know exactly where we are, but it’s clear that the majority of the market in no way resembles peak ZIRP.

We are super excited about our latest investment; one that has had us excited from the first meeting... The First Thirty has participated in a £3.5m Seed round into Cerve. At TFT, we are grounded in data and intelligence being an unlock for systems change in food systems and ultimately in human health. But data in a silo will not be sufficient in changing how ALL stakeholders in the supply chain operate or how end users consume data. The data needs to move, to be exchanged efficiently and to be meaningful in today's context with the opportunity to drive future contexts. We have for a long time been looking for a company building the digital infrastructure that could solve for this data efficiency and transport problem in the food system. While we have met some great companies, there has always been a mismatch on scope, approach, domain knowledge, ambition, vision or impact. Then we met Dan Mazig🎗️. There was a sharpness rare to see and a lazer focus on a problem he understood well. But with that was also a calm thoughtfulness around the opportunity Cerve had in front it. Today Cerve tackles an unstructured data inefficiency problem that is a major contributor to food waste. Tomorrow, a structured data exchange can expose new meaningful data to make food systems more sustainable, efficient, healthy and productive. We knew immediately this was what we were looking for. Dan and commercial leader David Walker were the right team, with the right backgrounds, the right approach in today's supply chain context and with ambitious vision about the potential for transformation. TFT and Cerve share a vision that through their platform technology the supply chain can be more efficient today and decommodified tomorrow. Cerve is a platform that has the potential to reshape our relationships and decision-making processes throughout the food system. Shout out to Tom Carpenter and his awesome venture Mycelium 🍄 Mycelium is solving a big problem in the sustainability world, pertaining to how we calculate and account for carbon emissions. Tom massively influenced my decision not to do any carbon offsetting for Better Tomorrow Brands given that it's a bit of a shady enterprise and any claims that we might make about being carbon neutral would be questionable if scrutinised. Instead, we're building our company to be sustainable from the ground up, so not only are we developing eco-friendly brands such as doogood, we: 🛑 Avoid greenwashing 🛳️ Use low carbon shipping methods ♻️ Use minimal, sustainable packaging 🚚 Keep our operations lean and efficient 🫧 Are as transparent as possible, without putting our IP at risk In the future, I would love to pay our successes forward by supporting some of our best environmental ventures, but for the foreseeable, we'll be heads down gaining traction and ensuring our brands are profitable. Profitability is a sustainability metric often ignored, but it's fundamentally important, especially in early start-ups such as our. Last week, the ‘CAIO Collective’ caught up in central London for an event that was anything but ordinary. Since last month’s meetup with our Business Safari through Big Data LDN, we’ve welcomed a further seventeen in person members and over 60 virtual members!  So… this was a gathering of some of the sharpest minds in AI leadership all focused on navigating the increasingly complex landscape of driving real value from artificial intelligence and its real-world applications. This session came at a critical time, as the sector grapples with new regulations, ethical considerations, and the rapid pace of technological advancement and this meant a packed agenda. By strong demand, we pushed the AI talent, learning, and development into December’s meetup using the time instead to focus on this month’s hot topic… the European AI Act (AIA). So… the AIA was at the forefront of our discussions this time around. Its impact on the industry is set to be profound, but not without some controversy. While many welcomed the Act’s intent to enforce transparency, fairness and accountability, there was a fervent shared concern about its potential to curb innovation. This was especially the case for small and medium enterprises. For many in the Collective, this regulation represents a call to action. It’s not just about compliance; it’s about demonstrating how responsible AI can genuinely thrive under a robust framework. The debate also touched on the strategic importance of engaging with policymakers early and ensuring that the voices of practitioners who understand AI’s real-world complexities are really heard. Another focal point was the rise of AI-powered decision-making systems. From dynamic supply chain optimisation to real-time fraud detection, AI’s ability to handle complex decision-making processes is driving a new wave of operational efficiency across industries. However, it’s not without its challenges. Many organisations are grappling with how to deploy these systems at scale while ensuring transparency and maintaining a human in the loop oversight. The discussion highlighted that successful AI deployment isn’t just about technology; it’s about building trust - both within organisations and with their customers.
