What exactly is "#compute"? Why does my workload need the particular resources it does - and why did it not "go faster" when I bought faster hardware? Why isn't there just a "bigger box"? Over on the endjin blog, Ian Griffiths has published the first in a series on "modern compute" which gives you a primer on the nature of computation, and the different types of machine we have in our arsenal today, from CPUs to GPUs and NPUs. One of my beefs with terraform is it’s trying so hard to be flat. Some of us want very dynamic scripts. But when you create a k8s cluster, form the kubexonfig file, then need to use the kubexonfig file to load in the rest of the parts like ingress, having a depends_on would be nice for providers. I did cheat a little and abuse the variable system to force the provider to wait, but then you run into what about a workspace that will have kubernetes set to false and get a zero count for your k8s module? Then it gets angry because the module output isn’t there. I still like Chef. Chef let me do what I want when I want. Just was bad on creating the underlying infrastructure but great at configuring it once it was up. *shrug* #terraform #kubernetes #k8s #eks #automation #burgerkingmodel

If I were to revive my old project "Igor Engraver", it would totally be called "FrankenScore - a Body Resurrected". It would be open source. It would use a client/server model allowing server cloud hosting. It would use Clojure rather than Common Lisp. It would use Skia rather than QuickDraw GX. It would be cross-platform, not just for Pre-X Mac OS. It would consist of a minimal, extremely efficient core augmented with plugins. It would have an API allowing for third-party plugins (including paid ones). It would be Kickstarter-funded. It would be a one-person project. But do I want to go down that path? One for the non-squeamish living in close proximity to school age children: a rough analysis of the annual peaks in head lice and nits. https://lnkd.in/edmy6zdu I haven't used Flourish before, it's a user friendly service for publishing good quality data visualisations with context around them. It would be even better with more support for data wrangling. Cursor wrote the code to pull down the dataset from Google Trends using pytrends, demonstrating how the combination of web services, open source libraries and AI has changed coding into 'specify and test'.

I sometimes see no-code apps being peddled on YouTube as a simple way to get going - and don’t get me wrong, it’s great for validation - but imagine having your code base somewhere and not owning or understanding the code or understanding the security, the servers it’s hosted on? What happens when you want to go from 1000 customers to 10,000, 100,000, 1 million? You’re essentially at the mercy of whoever actually owns your code, you can’t leave, and now they just quadrupled your monthly cost because they can. That magical AI API you were just using? They’ll wake up one day and charge 200K/year to interface with it now. What are you going to do, leave? Write your own code? You don’t know how, you will be paying up. Long story short, own your code, and in the long term, own your servers too.

I've created a couple of #Kafka Connect source connectors for bringing status updates from social media networks (#Bluesky and #Mastodon) into Kafka.
