It speaks volumes that the shift from "cloud first" to "cloud when appropriate" has hit the BBC. We're seeing an increase in enquiries from companies like Linkpool (featured in this article) who were born in the cloud, and are now hitting an age/maturity where a transformative saving can be made by switching to Colocation. Worth a read for those in my network who are beginning to hit thresholds of control, flexibility, scalability and cost in hyperscale cloud.

The reason that HPE and some other (mainly US) companies continue their practice of giving 0% annual discretionary increases to UK pensions earned before April 1997 is simply because the current UK law allows them to. Despite gaining support from an increasing number of MP's for action, letters returned to constituents from the previous Tory and current Labour minister contain the exact same DWP text blocks. DWP are unwilling to even think about changing the law to address the issue, but instead roll out a flawed view they've held for more than a decade : "... it is generally seen to be unreasonable to add liabilities to pension schemes that could not possibly have been considered in the funding assumptions that determined the contributions to be paid at the time." In the real world, by making a positive discretionary award in any year a scheme will have 'added liabilities which were not previously considered in the funding assumptions' . So the DWP view doesn't match the reality of what pension schemes actually do! Why might DWP be so fixed in their flawed view? Is it that they are trying to protect schemes which the government have to support from increased costs and those of us in company funded schemes are just seen as collateral damage? Our new Pensions minister needs to actually think about this (rather than continue to sign DWP letters) before she allows anyone to touch the funding surpluses that exist in many company schemes.
