I have been fortunate to be involved in and to have read so many articles about why saving design and technology as a curriculum subject is so important, but this one https://bit.ly/3C32kC2, written by Laura Tuck, R&D team Lead at The Washing Machine Project, really nails it. Where learning is fun, it is often infectious. Where possible, it needs to be connected to students' real-world experience. In my opinion, there is no better way of delivering careers advice, information, and inspiration than through curriculum delivery. We also need to recognise that the purpose of school is to prepare young people to step confidently into a complex and fast-changing society. The use of the word 'snobbery' in this article is, in my opinion, genius. It nails why the subject is where it is; for too long, we have suffered from academic snobbery that refuses to position hands-on, kinesthetic learning as on a par with traditional academic education. This has to change. If we want more engineers, designers, problem solvers, and innovators to help shape our future, we need to support this subject now. This is in today's Labour Manifesto: "Labour will also reform the Conservatives’ broken Apprenticeships Levy. The current rigid rules ignore vital skills and training needed to access apprenticeships. Labour will create a flexible Growth and Skills Levy, with Skills England consulting on eligible courses to ensure qualifications offer value for money." Hurrah!! Agencies who support & sponsor the School of Communication Arts 2.0 already know that we've been working for this announcement for quite a while (count the years!) 😌 . In fact, we had a meeting planned at The Drum Labs on July 3rd (day before election) with our sponsors to start preparing our list of short courses that we want to provide our industry. Those sponsors already helped us develop our, recently launched, Degree Level Creative Apprenticeship. This is a great example of what an industry can achieve when it works together. Using levy funding, employees get their own amazing life-coach who helps them develop a bespoke curriculum to futureproof their career (and their workplace). There is room for one or two more around the table on July 3rd. Please get in touch if your company can share a voice.

ASCL’s response to the Department for Education’s Curriculum and Assessment Review references the “forgotten third”. But today, 84% of 19-year-olds hold a standard pass at GCSE English and 81% for maths. If we include 16-19 education, the forgotten third is not a third… It is important that the Association of School AND College Leaders does not forget the work of colleges. #loveourcolleges #furthereducation

The Future Skills Questionnaire is great for informing your career programme. What can be missed is that the second section "Skills for Life & Work Questions" is fantastic for your curriculum planning and identifying gaps in skills developed for cohorts to help narrow the outcome gaps! A simple to implement questionnaire that can tell you so much.

Level 7 Senior Leader programme could be stopped It seems that the Labour government is going to replace the Apprenticeship Levy with a Growth and Skills Levy. That means that you will be able to do a lot more accredited courses, without the 12 months of the current apprenticeships. However it also seems that they might be stopping the Level 7 programmes, the equivalent of an MA. So if you want to do a Level 7 Senior Leader programme, you will need to do it now. Our next induction session is on the 23rd October. And for Happy it is very much based on the principles of the Happy Manifesto. A culture of trust and freedom where people make their own decisions. If you pay the Apprenticeship Levy, you can do it from that. If you don’t pay the Levy (ie, you have less than £3 million in payroll), it is 95% funded by the government. So for just £700 you will have a full two year Senior Leadership programme, with workshops every month and coaching too.
