This is a very well-informed and detailed examination of the complex and murky area of 'principal-based' media buying with particularly insightful comments from Ruben Schreurs It shows just how difficult it is for Advertisers to truly know what is going on in their name and with their money, so seeking independent advice, the tightest contractual terms and the most thorough audit rights are all vital to avoid the many elephant traps. But why has the world of media reached a point where the advertiser has to count their fingers after they've shaken hands with their media agency? Radical new approaches to accountability and transparency are needed, but these have to include a grown-up discussion about terms of business. We can't get to a point where fees are zero and all the margin is made on media trading, surely?

Are good times a-coming? It is interesting to see that UK ad spend grew by 9% to hit ‘new highs’ in Q1 2024. The UK advertising market grew 9% to £9.2bn during the first three months of 2024 Hmm. As Marketing spend is definately a “positive sign” and this industry is one of the “driving factors” in the UK’s economic recovery.... Is this the beginning of a turn? How is it feeling out there? Positive? Gloomy? Interesting to see if you are feeling more positive for the rest of the year? (I am) ....or is it just a blip? What are your thoughts?

I noticed today that according to the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA) that TV Media price inflation during Q2 in the UK rose by 28%. Thats massive in a fragile economy, with increasing content demands, and more channels to consume it. It appears to me (obviously) that there's an increasing need in the market for scalable low cost production (using tech like virutal production/ AI generated content) but moreover it's about getting that content right first time and created in a way that enables it to fit with a global/ local marketing strategy (massive waste and dilution here). We're seeing (at Wooshii) how this can become a reality with AI interrogating the DNA of content led campaigns (paid for and organic) to understand and predict the 'right' content required to meet strategy objectives, and then fulfil those needs through agile content production methods (virtual/ AI and offshoring) - not ignoring the need for human intervention to drive the vehicle and add sprinkles of magic. We're seeing more and more waste in the video economy, and a key focus for the business is to identify it and remedy it. It's clearly going to become more and more of a necessity if the WFA analysis is anything to go by. #tv #AI #Marketing #Video

Ofcom's UK Media Nations 2024 report is out and it is shocking. In their own words: "Stark generational divide as 16-24s watch just 20 mins of live telly daily" Digging deeper into the report, we see a 16% decline in 16-24s viewing in just one year, a 12% decline in 25-34s. But it's not just the kids, all age groups except 75+ declined, most and most by double figures. It's a clear wake-up call for the industry, if not needed already. TV program makers need to find new distribution channels for their loved formats, and urgently. Some are already doing this, some are far behind. Gaggl is one solution, there are others. Will the next government bring increased regulation for the UK advertising industry? The UK general election falls on the last day of MAD//FEST LONDON, so by the time Grace Carter gets on stage to start the party in E1, many of the votes for the political parties will have already been cast. One change that the new government could oversee is increased external regulation and governance of the advertising industry - would that be a good thing or a bad thing for you? Let's take AI for example. Katherine Viner, editor of the Guardian, recently called for AI regulation. She said, "Without quality journalism to train and ground large language models, these technologies would struggle to make sense of the world around them." Without quality, trusted data to train the AI models on, it is easy to see how we could get into a vicious circle of AI choking on its own exhaust fumes: 1 - Incorrect content published 2 - AI reads that incorrect content 3 - AI therefore writes incorrect content Crap in, crap out, as they say in the trade! ;-) I would also add that digital advertising relies on quality content that consumers spend time with, so that the advertising has a chance of having an impact. For example: The difference in dwell time on an MFA site, which uses GenAI to create the content and click-bait to get somebody there, to a page with 10 ads, is a world away from the experience of a subscriber to a premium publisher site, who logs on to consume the content they pay for and only sees a single ad next to that valued content. 💬 - What do you think - more government regulation or not? #ai #regulation #advertising

Interesting afternoon at #BrandSafetySummit London yesterday. The final session on Made For Advertising (MFA) sites really summed the need to have a refreshed conversation around inventory quality and media effectiveness, particularly in the era of programmatic * Much of the debate focused on defining hat qualified as a ‘MFA property’ but skirted around the crux of the issue - humans aren’t properly reviewing what is being bought and the effectiveness of the domain and / or format * Blame being placed on the technology (logistics, adaptability, pace of change). Inclusion and exclusion lists were the often the perceived ‘solution’ but came at the expense of investment in diverse voices and quality journalism * Per the ANA reports, a ‘race to the bottom’ terms of cheap CPMs and reach, which in turns drives the need to speed up or skip human reviews, driving a greater need for automation and increased risk of bad actors * Lack of clarity on what the KPI for ‘quality’ is, and how previous proxies like view-ability have made the problem worse Fascinating debate - but one that feels like the soltuion is always a technological one vs a human one… #BrandSafety #Programmatic #AdFraud Responsible Marketing Agency
