B2B sales = where the progression and reward is as a salesperson If you’re serious about your sales career then you’ll need this experience. Particularly if you want to break into tech sales. If you have any cold outreach, prospecting or outbound calling on your CV from a B2B environment then use it. That’s transferable. And if you don’t, then it might be worth considering other B2B sales roles as a stepping stone. Sometimes it’s better to earn and learn. Tech sales isn’t an easy space to break into, but it can be a rewarding one. An entry sales role in tech can get you £35k as a base If you perform then you can add £10-15k to this in year 1. If you’re consistent and good then you can progress to your next role in 18 months. You’ll earn more in this next role. And if you’re good then you can earn a lot more. This isn’t for everyone though. And a reason for wanting to get into sales isn’t just because you like speaking with people. I seem to be working a lot of SDR roles lately. 😍 Is it a sign that businesses see the value of a strong SDR function again? A common trend I have seen with sales teams over the last year or so is businesses removing the SDR/BDR function. So why is it coming back to build a team of SDRs? The truth is the role is changing, businesses are not necessarily looking for someone who is stepping into sales but seem to be leaning towards people who are already experienced in the space. It's around 60%. 60% of startup businesses fail within the first 3 years of trading ❌ That means for every 10 businesses that opened their doors in September 2021, 6 of them are no longer with us. But 40% are 👏🏻 & one of those 40% is Rise Site Solutions Ltd. Which if anyone has the pleasure of knowing Charlie Robinson (either personally or professionally) this will really come as no surprise. I still remember the first time we sat down together to discuss what his own agency really was going to look like. It was about 12 months prior to "doing it" & understandably so. After all, leaving a secure role where you're professionally comfortable & progressing nicely (which was exactly the dynamic that Charlie was in back then), is no mean feat 💯 But after months & months of conversations, of planning & of playing the "what happens if it doesn't quite work out" game (although perhaps a little pointless!), in September 2021 Rise Site Solutions opened it's doors. The last 3 years have been great fun - selfishly we know how lucky we are to work with not only fantastic recruiters but also lovely people as well & Charlie is both of them. How do you keep your SDR's and give them the chance to move into being an AE? If I could state the number 1 reason for good SDR's leaving their current company, it's that they can't get the opportunity to progress into being an AE. Now the reasons range from being miss-sold/even outright lied to regarding the path to being an AE, to the company not needing more AE's and of course a whole number of other reasons. The fact is though, companies lose good talent they've spent time developing because they've not managed this well, and it's not about speed and promoting ahead of time, it's about expectation setting and developing talent. In this final clip from my recent interview with Reuben Howard, we discussed how SDR's and companies can help to improve this situation. As an SDR, what can you do to really set yourself apart? To really get yourself noticed? Don’t just focus on booking meetings. Focus on booking quality meetings. One’s that are useful. With a clear problem and a desire to change it. If you do this then the quality of your qualification will shine through. You’ll get comfortable asking the right questions, even when they feel uncomfortable to ask. And you’ll get really good at listening to the real motivations of your prospects. The type of motivations that are often hidden in initial conversations. Or the type of motivations that lots of sales people walk straight past. So if you do this, not only will your business be wowed by the quality of the meetings that you’re bringing in. But you’ll have developed your communication skills to an elite level.
