A great reminder at the SCL Sales Ltd training course I attended today, we are ALL salespeople, something I believe many of us are guilty of forgetting. Scottish Manufacturing and Supply Chain Conference and Exhibition - My takeaways. Yesterday I attended the first day of the Scottish Manufacturing and Supply Chain Conference and Exhibition for the first time and a number of things struck me. 1. It was very busy, although by all accounts not as busy as last year but that was due to it now being split over 2 days instead of 1. 2. The talks werent as well attended as you would hope, although with six different stages and operating throughout the day, (sometimes more than one at a time), this was understandable. The bluetooth headphones for all stages other than the main stage was a brilliant idea. 3. I got to see the legend of Engineering that is Richard Noble, (former land speed record holder) who not only did a talk but was at one of the stands pretty much all day talking to people and signing his book. 4. The main themes of the exhibitors seemed to be, 3D printing, Robotics in Manufacturing namely Cobots, and IoT technology. Obviously others apsects of manufacturing and supply where there but this was my impression. 5. I met loads of people I havent spoken to in a long time. Every single one wanted to know how I was doing which was really nice. However, I was disappointed / concerned that 4 stands werent as busy as they should have been. These stand were Scottish Enterprise (SMAS), Scottish Engineering, CEED and NMIS. In my opinion these should have been stowed out all day. Why? - because for the vast majority of people that were there they were looking to try and solve a problem or to improve upon something. These organisations single purpose is to help Scottish companies and the employees within be better. I spent time talking to three of these organisations and they like me are so passionate about helping people and companies. They have a huge network of resource to call on and if they dont know the answer they know who will. They are at the forefront of modern manufacturing thinking so we need to use them. This may be due to people not understanding what these organisations do and how they can help. Yes there is a financial implication to using them but guess what they are worth every penny. As I said earlier this week if we want to help the next John Logie Baird not only invent the next big thing, we need to work together utilising the resources that are there to hopefully create and grow more Scottish companies that operate on a global scale. We are good enough we just need to be ambitious enough and use the resources available to us.

ASCO Group wins contract to manage quay at Teesside freeport Aberdeen’s ASCO Group has won a three-year deal to operate a new heavy lift quay at the Teesside Freeport. The logistics firm will manage the Teesworks £114m south bank heavy lift quay creating 65 jobs in the North East of England. The 450-metre quayside development was chosen to serve South Korean firm SeAH Wind Ltd’s £450m manufacturing facility, allowing monopiles to be shipped out to #offshore #wind farms in the North Sea. Teesworks said it expects the monopile factory will be operational in 2026. Teesworks and the freeport Teesworks is a private/public partnership spearheading the development of a 4,500 acre brownfield site which includes the former Redcar #steelworks. It is a major part of the Teesside Freeport, the largest UK freeport, which also includes Teesport, the Port of Middlesbrough, the Port of Hartlepool and Teesside International Airport. The heavy-lift quay was awarded £107m of loan funding in the UK Infrastructure Bank’s first ever investment in 2021. Teesworks is 90% owned by local developers Chris Musgrave of JC Musgrave, and Martin Corney of Northern Land Management and the remaining 10% is owned by the public-sector South Tees Development Corporation (STDC). ASCO Group work scope Work to be offered by ASCO Group will include quayside planning and scheduling, operations coordination, #vessel scheduling, stevedoring and internal distribution services. The Aberdeen firm expects work to begin in the summer this year, with the first vessel expected to berth in September. ASCO Group CEO Mike Pettigrew, said: “The south bank quay is a flagship project for Asco which will propel us along the right track right at the start of 2024, en route to achieving our future goals. “It confirms and reinforces our intention to make significant investment into increasing our footprint in the new energies sector over the coming years. “Winning such a major contract is a testament to the work that we have done over the years where we have delivered world-class logistics services across the #energy industry while contributing to the economic growth of the communities in which we operate.” Garry O'Malley, operations director at Teesworks, said Asco have “a great deal of experience in port and terminal operations both in the UK and globally”. He added: “The award of this contract also marks another milestone for the Teesworks site as it makes the transition to greener #energy. “ASCO Group as the quay operator will provide the operational expertise required to ensure service levels for users of this valuable asset are of the highest standard. This partnership will create up to 65 direct jobs providing more employment opportunities for the area.”

ACQUISITION NEWS: AFC Industries has acquired Birmingham UK based distributor Forward Industrial Products (Forward Industrial Products Group) through its TFC Business Unit. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Forward Industrial Products Group Ltd is an industry leading supplier of C Class components, vendor managed inventory services and MRO services, with a focus on enhancing the productivity and effectiveness of its customers’ manufacturing operations. Forward provides a range of value-added services as well as both standard and custom items and engineered products. Birmingham-based Bracebridge Corporate Finance was the sole advisor to Forward for the transaction. We’re really pleased to be part of AFC and the growing TFC group. Handing over from one team to the next using a Shift Handover Over Board. In a newly created small cell of 8 staff per shift in a large factory, they were struggling with 2 issues: 1) communicating key messages from one shift to the next oncoming shift, 2) arriving day shift not knowing the department status from the night shift. We piloted a Shift Hand Over Board showing key messages indicated by green (yes) or red (no). These key criteria were selected via a brainstorming session with the combined team. The key purpose: What key pieces of information you’d like to know that ensures you have a good day? Since their Supervisor to Supervisor hand over was only 5 mins, they wanted to capture the important things, ensuring nothing was missed. The Board allowed them to do this. They also wanted to test an Hour-by-Hour chart added to the board, showing at an instant the rate of production for each hour block. While this had only just started, they were optimistic of success, as other departments in the site used the same tool. You’ll also note they included the latest Gemba Walk Observation sheet, indicating findings of the recent Gemba Walk. A visual Shift Hand Over boards helps to ensure important information is captured and sets up the teams for success.
