The Ethical Implications of AI and Automation in Business Operations - Sketchnote I was at the CIPD's #FestivalOfWork this week at Excel in London. And what a wonderful event it was - lots of people, lots of conversations - a vibrant and lively atmosphere. This event is now a free event and all the better for it. The new venue worked a treat for the larger number of participants- the exhibition and sessions were busy, but I never felt crowded. A great range of topics were on the agenda in the multiple stages - business transformation, learning & development, wellbeing, equalities, internal communications, ethics and so on. My only quibble is that most of the sessions were only 30 minutes in length - I would love to see some longer sessions, in addition to the keynotes, where topics are explored in greater depth. I Sketchnoted 8 sessions over the course of the two days and will post all my Sketchnotes here, on other social media platforms and in a summary blog. 1 of 8 - The first session I took part in was on the subject of 'The Ethical Implications of AI and Automation and was presented by James Proctor and Louise Johnston of Phase 3 - a Manchester based company. This was one of a number of sessions exploring different aspects of the use of AI in organisations and the changes that we are facing in our working lives. This session brought out both some of the benefits, but also some key ethical issues to consider in using AI such as risks of bias, issues of transparency and trust, data privacy and concerns about job losses. James and Louise emphasised the value of people and AI working together - the copilot model. I particularly liked the phrase 'human in the loop' which is about designing in that it is always a person that makes the decisions, when using AI applications. At Insights we continue to embrace digital transformation and recognise that easy access to engaging virtual learning is at the forefront of professional development. It's only Tuesday night and I've already spent most of the last two days delivering what I hope have been engaging and interactive virtual learning sessions! Here’s how I’m prepare: 🔧 **Tech Check:** Ensuring all my tools—camera, microphone, and software—are ready to provide a seamless experience. I have become a big advocate for apps too such as Slido, time timers and the new WebEx AI application for summarising content for late joiners. Thanks Peggy Koopman-Brandwagt 😉 📚 **Content Refinement:** Adapting materials to be more dynamic and suitable for online learning, with a focus on interactivity. 💡 **Engagement Strategies:** Incorporating Slido, breakout rooms, gamification, music and Q&A sessions to keep participants engaged and active. 🌐 **Global Mindset:** Tailoring content to accommodate diverse time zones and learning styles for a more inclusive experience. 🛠️ **Backup Plans:** Just in case my tech decides to throw a tantrum, I’m prepared with backups...if a backup is a raised heart rate, loud swallowing and the desire to launch a router out of a window. Happy infographic Monday. Many organisations have become increasingly concerned with having a representative and inclusive workforce as they see it as a crucial way to foster innovation, enhance organisational performance, to reflect the diverse markets and communities where they operate. However, building a truly inclusive workforce requires thoughtful strategies and sustained efforts to create conditions that support the long-term success of diverse employees. Today’s infographic highlights ways in which diversity can be embedded within hiring practices, especially when an organisation is intentionally trying to increase diversity amongst its workforce. Attracting, hiring, and retaining diverse talent, including implementing inclusive recruitment processes, fostering an equitable workplace culture, offering ongoing support and development opportunities, and ensuring leadership accountability are some of the ways this could be done. By prioritising these factors, organisations can not only hire more diversely but also unlock the full potential of a varied workforce.
