Is this a perfect example of what is wrong with policing today? There is so much focus nationally around recording crime accurately against HOCR that it becomes the target. In focusing so much time and so many resources on that, it becomes the target whilst actually investigating that crime and protecting people takes a back seat. “Hitting the target, but missing the point.” #police #policing #policetargets

An excellent article by John Sutherland about how policing has arrived at its current crisis. There are two major factors missing; the failure in leadership and the role of professional standards. Speak to any cop today and they are the two specific concerns and reasons for leaving. There is going to be a tsunami of resignations soon. Urgent reform is required. That does not mean playing politics or apologising to all and sundry and panic policing. The time for sticking plasters is over. An entire new strategy and focus on community policing supported by a strong detective capability is required.
