Ever thought about the long-term benefits of software modernisation? 🌟 In a recent techUK panel event, experts like Steve Lydford, Codurance's COO, shared invaluable insights on modernising critical legacy systems while maintaining business as usual. With around 70% of digital transformations failing (source: McKinsey 2022), it's vital to adopt strategies that mitigate risks and ensure successful outcomes. One key takeaway was the importance of focusing on core practices and skill sets. Practices such as eXtreme Programming, refactoring, CI/CD, and automated testing can significantly improve the modernisation process. Although adopting these may seem time-consuming initially, the benefits far outweigh the initial effort. Establishing a culture of continuous testing and improvement will enable your team to deliver greater value faster and make systems easier to update in the long run. Moreover, don't fall into the trap of thinking all legacy systems are bad. Sometimes, moving to the cloud without modernising applications can just transfer old problems to a new environment, leading to increased costs. Pragmatic due diligence is crucial.
