Indian art prices are soaring to record highs, yet not a single art fund exists. Here's why 🖼️ Around 2006, there were actually quite a few art funds. Seven of them to be precise. Perhaps the market for paintings was doing good that time and people wanted to benefit from it. However, there were several issue with these funds. 1) All came around the same time and ended up inflating the market. The Art Index (by IIM-A and Aura Art) shows a peak in 2006, which took 16 years to surpass, while the Nifty rose 4x in that period. 2) The 2008 crisis came soon after and investors wanted to redeem. In other words, they first inflated the price and then came to sell all at once. The index dropped 3x. 4) The funds were structured for 5-6 years whereas art is a long term asset. As it was not regulated, wealth managers were also paid exorbitent commissions to sell it. 5) Most importantly, these funds were not registered with sebi as collective investment schemes (CIS). Hence, Sebi asked them to wind up. Fast forward to now, there is not a single fund that invests solely in Indian art. But with the market touching an all time high (due to recent bull market the rich are getting richer and have started buying luxury good like paintings) and with clear regulations in place, we might start seeing some Art focused AIFs.
