“Star Schema BI Data Model Sold Separately?” Why is Power BI, Azure, and Databricks NOT WORKING for your BI project? You are missing the $35,000,000 extended star schema atomic data model required to activate all features of Power Bi and it can only be designed by a real ENTERPRISE Data Modeler. “Star Schema Data Model Sold Separately.”
Microsoft leaves out that fact to sell Power BI and Azure, and most companies discover the true cost of not having a BI star schema data model the hard way; millions in failed IT projects, fraud, mysteriously lost revenue, no proactive business management using real-time BI data, supply chain issues, bankruptcy.
IBM does the same thing with Cognos. It also requires a star schema data model.
Star schema data models are NEVER included with the tools that require them because they are derrived from business requrements documentation that is unique to each company. Therefore, the vendors cannot create it nor include it.
The internal corporate business requirements documentation, BRD, can only be translated into a star schema by a true master of data modeling structure design using 36 to 60+ skill sets combined into the mind of one single person, and UML tools such as Erwin or ER studio.
The UML tools are like a carpenter’s hammer. One still needs up to 60 skill sets to interpret and translate business requirements into a star schema data model and database. You can buy a thousand hammers and never become a carpenter or have all the UML tools in the world and never transform into an Enterprise Data Modeler.
Note that Enterprise Data Modelers do NOT model data itself, but the structure that stores the data in such a way to enforce business requirements and make data usable and compatible with modern BI tools such as Power BI and Cognos. You can’t just use any data structure you want, choose randomly, or happen to have.
Both IBM and Microsoft show this requirement in their online documentation, but do not mention the true cost of the requirement during sales negotiations. The data modeling cost is nearly the same as the two to three year cost of third party BI licences at $250/month per employee for companies with 70,000 or more employees. However, you only have to pay the data modeling cost once every 30 to 50+ years. Third party licencing costs are forever.
Data modeling pays for itself in cost savings in just one to five years. However, beware of scams that promise a quick data model in 6 months for $200,000. A multi-million dollar BI system will not run with a fake cheap data model. The structure must perfectly match a known strategy, star schema, with zero errors. If you didn’t buy the real data model for BI, that’s why its not working. It’s like buying a car with no engine. When you open the hood you see a note that says, “Engine sold separately.”
