🚨 We need the role of the CDO to help join up the Business & Data Teams 🚨 Many Business Leaders don't fully understand the Data World or have had negative experiences with previous Data Projects Many Data Leaders are not close enough to the Business to understand how they provide the Business Value expected from them. I had Kyle Winterbottom on the LEIT DATA Value show this week discussing the evolution of the Chief Data Officer. One area we focused on was how we make the Business and Data world get more aligned and work more collaboratively.🤔 And the answer is NOT buying more tools or software. We both agreed that you must have 50% technical and 50% C-suite storytelling skills. ❌ The CDO role should not be just a technical role. ✅ More of a Business objectives translator that can turn discussions with the business into features and capabilities prioritised. With the date for the next UK General Election having been announced yesterday, I thought I'd have a look at what it would take to create an election results map using Power BI and the forthcoming Icon Map Pro. Well it turns out it's super easy! Unsupervised Learning by Maven Analytics was one of those courses I didn’t want to end. It was absolutely brilliant—full of insightful content, delivered with enthusiasm and expertise. I became fascinated by the endless possibilities it offers beyond standard data analytics. From understanding customers and employees to improving products, the potential applications are vast. The final project was especially engaging, reinforcing Alice Zhao's view that unsupervised learning is both a science and an art. Many assignments made this clear. While the scientific results may be the same for everyone, our interpretations are shaped by domain knowledge, experience, and personal context. I am looking forward to working on more projects to keep my skills sharp. Data literacy is the start, not the end. Data literacy has become the 'thing' recently, and for good reason. Companies have spent eye watering amounts of money building the data infrastructure and getting to grips with reporting, analytics. So now the question is, 'do the business know how to use the stuff we've given them'? Enter the data literacy programme. The future will go one step further. As hunger for disruptive technology increases exponentially, technical specialists will move closer to such disruptive tech as the market will naturally move this talent pool. Result - foundational expertise like Data Architecture will suffer an even bigger talent shortage problem than today. Solution - the end user will need to "self-architect" their data. They will need skills in running and maintaining 'the infrastructure', while tech/product teams drive the bottom line benefit for Boards and shareholders with the latest shiny toy. This in itself is going to require better Data Mgmt (incl. data architecture) tooling, but also better business-ready Data Management learning content targeted at the end-user, not the data professional.
