UK company TagEnergy has energised the 100 MW / 200 MWh Lakeside battery energy storage system in North Yorkshire, England. The Lakeside project marks the TagEnergy’s first transmission-connected BESS, which it fully owns and operates. Tesla, acting as the Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor, supplied a system of Tesla Megapack 2XL lithium-ion batteries. Habitat Energy serves as the route to market and battery optimiser, while RES manages the asset. Franck Woitiez, CEO of TagEnergy, commented: “For a while, Lakeside will be the largest transmission-connected BESS project in the UK, and it is an important project that truly moves the needle for the energy transition. “We’re proud to have delivered the project efficiently, energised and connected onto National Grid’s transmission network without significant delays or operating issues. That is exactly what is needed to speed the transition.” TagEnergy acquired full ownership of the facility from RES in December 2021, with construction commencing in August 2023. Financial close was achieved in October 2023, secured through a landmark non-recourse debt package. Woitiez noted: “We’re pleased to be working with our Lakeside project partners Habitat Energy, Tesla and RES to realise the full value of battery storage by connecting more people to more renewable power in our relentless pursuit of net zero.” #cleanenergy

Green energy company ScottishPower Renewables has confirmed #Lowestoft as the long-term home and heart of its UK #offshorewind operations with the acquisition of a new site in the town’s PowerPark – expanding its existing footprint in the town. Charlie Jordan, CEO of ScottishPower Renewables (SPR), said: “Our continued commitment and investment in Lowestoft highlights the town’s role as a powerhouse for the #cleanenergy industry within the East of England region and we’re here to stay.” Ross Ovens, SPR’s Managing Director for Offshore Development and Operations, added: “It’s really exciting that, six years after we put a spade in the ground and built our EA ONE base in Lowestoft, we’re now increasing our footprint, presence and investment in the town. Scotland - Statera Energy has submitted plans for a 3GW green hydrogen production facility in Aberdeenshire. "The first 500 MW of operational capacity is expected to be online by 2028, and when operating at its full, 3 GW capacity "Kintore Hydrogen" could save up to 1.4 million tonnes of CO2 per year." "Kintore Hydrogen can play a leading role in decarbonising the energy system and unlocking significant investment in the Scottish renewables economy. The Scottish Government has targeted a five-fold increase in offshore wind energy generation by 2030, with the ScotWind programme supporting up to 28GW of projects in the coming years, to shift the energy system to being renewables-led. At full capacity, the amount of energy generated in and off the shores of Scotland will far exceed local demand." 🌊🌬️🔋 Ørsted is set to install a 600 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Swardeston, near Norwich, co-located with the onshore substation for Hornsea 3. This setup aims to minimize disruption for local residents and businesses while storing excess electricity generated during low-demand periods to balance the grid. Expected to be operational by the end of 2026, the BESS will significantly reduce price volatility for consumers and help manage UK energy systems by smoothing supply and demand variations. ⚡🌀 With this investment, Ørsted is enhancing its growing portfolio of storage solutions alongside its twelve offshore wind farms in the UK. The company has 660 MW (1,850 MWh) of storage projects in the UK and the US, and a pipeline of over 2 GW of storage opportunities across the UK, Ireland, and the US. The Hornsea 3 project, awarded a Contract for Difference (CfD) in 2022, is the world’s largest single offshore wind farm with a capacity of 2.9 GW, featuring 200 Siemens Gamesa 14 MW wind turbines, expected to be operational in 2027.

For many years Energy brokers sold Energy with a very blurred tag line, this was: "Customers don't pay for our services, suppliers pay us directly" Whilst this is partially true, brokers have always made their money by charging 'Commission'. From the image below we have an example where we have charged a 0.3p in commission. This breaks down to an estimated amount of £641.46 per year (estimated as Energy Usage directly effects spend and therefore commission) We send this to all our customers, not only because we are clear and transparent - we send it because we care. #business #transparency #honesty #partnersnotpocketers

At Edina we recognise the importance and necessity of healthy fuel mix for energy resilience(our @MWM engines can run right now fueled with H2). I'm always surprised to see posts of peaking sites, where Clarke Energy were not even asked for an offer. Whether they need to be housed in an acoustic container or within a building (like that shown below), Clarke Energy have a competitive solution to offer. If your grid connection is >3MWe then we're definitely hard to beat. Sites of 7MWe, 22.5MWe (<50MWth) & 49.5MWe being a particular speciality, due to the high and efficient output of our INNIO Jenbacher units. We can offer full EPC (again as shown below) or simply just the Generating set for packaging by you, and everything in between. So (warning this bit is cheesy) why try the rest, when you haven't even considered the best?

As I reflect on my recent visit to Newcastle, I firmly believe there's a missed opportunity to transform the local economy. The iNgagane power plant, commissioned in 1968 with a 500 MW capacity, has been dormant for years but holds immense potential for refurbishment or repurposing. Newcastle has massive potential to grow its economy, driven by chemicals, mining, steel, textile and agriculture. Determining the feasibility of reviving vs repurposing could uncover untapped opportunities, of crucial value to the local economy. Newcastle municipality and Eskom should collaborate and revitalize this strategic asset. It has potential to deliver energy security, reduce electrical losses and lower municipal bulk operating expenditure. A great opportunity for Newcastle municipality to be offtaker.

This morning Strike Energy announced that it has been awarded 85 MWs of Certified Reserve Capacity on the SWIS for its fully integrated South Erregulla peaking gas power station for 2026. I thought I would point out the value of this project announcement today which ironically coincided with another period of maxium peak power prices in WA ($738 MWhr). Our peaker will use around 8 GJ of South Erregulla gas per MW which equates to a realised gas price for this event of around $92 GJ. Not a bad value add... I would encourage all Western Australian's to educate themselves on how our power is generated, priced and the inherent volatility that is being created with the phase out of baseload coal in WA. Strike's gas peaker will pair perfectly with the State's vast renewables and batteries to ensure we keep the lights on and the economy running. Today's Public Service Announcement: Always ask which heating value (higher or lower) someone is referring to - especially for alternative fuels. A recent discussion I had underscored a critical yet common oversight in performance analysis when comparing fuels—the role of heating values. Understanding the difference between Lower (LHV) and Higher Heating Values (HHV) is crucial, especially with the rise of alternative fuels which tend to have more hydrogen and less carbon. Here's a quick breakdown (with some simplifications): LHV excludes the latent energy of the water vapor produced during combustion. HHV includes this latent heat, offering a fuller measure of energy content. For natural gas, HHV is typically about 10% higher than LHV. As we shift towards fuels with higher hydrogen and lower carbon content, the volume of water in combustion products increases impacting the heating values differently. In gas turbines, where exhaust gases remain too hot for water to condense, LHV should be your guide. Basically, the extra energy in the water is unavailable to the gas turbine. In contrast, HRSGs cool these gases enough to condense water vapor, making HHV the correct metric. Notably, with hydrogen, the HHV to LHV ratio can rise to 1.2 due to the increased water content, slightly enhancing turbine output due to water's higher heat capacity. Bottom Line: When discussing fuel characteristics, always make sure it's clear which heating value is being discussed as it has downstream performance implications.

🌊 Key Insights from Siemens Energy's North Sea Panel Discussion 🌊   I had the privilege of participating in an insightful panel discussion at ONS, where we delved into the future of energy in the North Sea and how we realise the potential of this amazing energy system. Our conversation highlighted four critical points:   🌿Sustainable Energy Transition: The #NorthSea holds immense potential for renewable energy, particularly #offshorewind. Did you know that 81% of Europe’s offshore installed capacity is in the North Sea, now at 34.2GW? That's equivalent to powering 74 million households in Europe!   🔌Innovation and Technology: Embracing cutting-edge technology and innovation is crucial for the energy sector. Key first-of-a-kind projects like Hywind Tampen and Kassø eMethanol facility are being built on the shores and in the waters of the North Sea. These act as a blueprint for other regions and demonstrate what could be possible.    🤝Collaboration and Partnerships: The energy transition requires collaboration across industries and borders. We emphasized the need for strong partnerships to leverage collective expertise and resources. We also need to share the clean energy we’re generating across our continent - cross-border capacity will need to increase by 88GW by 2040 to keep our grids efficient.   💬Policy and Regulation: Supportive policies and regulations are essential to foster growth in the renewable energy sector.
