Now the dust has settled on Friday's news that ScottishPower Renewables has confirmed #lowestoft as the long-term home of its UK #offshorewind operations with an £8m investment in a site in the town's PowerPark, what does this really mean for the town and its future? This investment will acquire and build another permanent base for the developer in the town, close to its existing operations and maintenance base for East Anglia ONE offshore wind farm. Another 100 permanent jobs will be created at the new base, on Trinity Road, in its primary role as operations and maintenance base for the 1400MW East Anglia THREE offshore wind farm, as well as supporting the delivery of the company's offshore wind projects in the east of England . It is another three-decade commitment to the town by ScottishPower Renewables, which is the news that Lowestoft people want to hear. Investment in Lowestoft's regeneration, where TMS Media Limited started its life more than 35 years ago, and where some of its team live, is visible every day with increased port activity for #offshorewind, Associated British Ports Lowestoft's £30m LEEF project, the new Gull Bridge and much more. Investment in offshore wind projects is ultimately about delivering clean green homegrown energy to decarbonise the UK and ensure its energy security and supply - to sustain our increasing demand for energy to live our lives. What people don't always see is the wider effect these developments have on and in the community. The local economy benefits are felt far deeper than the engineering and technical suppliers working directly on offshore wind projects. This investment means business for local companies now and for another 30 years, for office supplies, equipment, accommodation, sandwich shops, cafes, taxis, stationery...the list goes on and on...and for another 30 years. Then there's the skills investment, training local people, investing in skills initiatives, working with local schools and colleges. On top of that there's the community work, supporting local causes, sponsorship helping organisations, schools and charities, the team volunteering in local activities, organising beach cleans and other community events. Offshore wind developers and operators are part of the local community they work in, playing active roles as individuals and teams as well as investors. 🇬🇧 Today’s annual Contracts for Difference auction in the UK has awarded contracts for nine new offshore wind projects. In response to the announcement, GWEC’s Chief Strategy Office for Offshore Wind Rebecca Williams said: “Today's Contracts for Difference auction results in the UK show a reinvigorated appetite among investors for renewable energy projects. “Nine offshore wind projects totaling 4.9 GW have been awarded contracts at a cost of £54-59 per megawatt hour (MWh). The UK has now certainly turned the page on last year's failed auction, and the sector can crack on with delivering cheaper energy to households and providing new clean jobs. “With GWEC's ten year outlook setting out a decade of rapid global growth for offshore wind, it's great to see mature markets like the UK demonstrating the benefits of collaboration between government and industry to ensure targets become turbines.” #offshorewind #uk #windenergy #time4action

📢New Government report highlights supply chain and skills shortages that could jeopardise UK offshore wind development 📢 This Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) report addresses the critical supply chain and skills shortages that could harm the UK's 2030 50 GW offshore wind power generation goal. Below are some of the report's key observations about the renewable energy skills shortage: "Shortages are particularly acute for design and commissioning engineers, project managers, and installation technicians. There is intense national and international competition for new and experienced hires with these skillsets." "From engineering and design professionals to the commissioning and installation workforce, personnel shortages may limit the UK’s ability to meet the BESS deployment targets."  "A more detailed, holistic skills assessment examining the skills pipeline and demand across these sectors would help inform how secondary and higher education and employers should respond." In addition to the points above, the report also references The OWIC’s Offshore Wind Skills Intelligence Report and the National Grid’s Building the Net Zero Energy Workforce, which state that: - The UK offshore wind workforce must increase from 32,000+ to 104,000+ by 2030 to achieve the 50 GW target. - 260,000 new roles must be filled by 2050 to meet growth targets and projected demand. As the report reveals, despite the UK's well-established engineering institutions and increased numbers of students and applicants, significant shortages of skilled labour still need to be addressed to maintain positive momentum in the transition towards renewable energy. The Green Jobs Plan, which the government is due to publish later this year, will address these issues through various recommendations and action points for institutions, associations and offshore wind businesses to implement over the coming years.
