It is imperative that we retain a focus on the optimisation of that infrastructure and enable continued investment in its development. We have seen how the transition from #2G, through to #3G, #4G and #5G have each enabled the development of more and more sophisticated solutions. The continued development of core infrastructure has to be sustainable, and over the last few months we have begun to see the challenges that the operators that provide it are facing. Both MTN Nigeria and Airtel Nigeria have declared significant foreign exchange (FX) losses in Nigeria, and the stress is not linked to them alone. The entire ecosystem is battling with a range of challenges that must be addressed. If we fail to do so, the downstream impact on innovation will be severe. Telecoms infrastructure requires a base level of investment to maintain its current capabilities, and significant additional investment to expand and grow. It is capital intensive, and that capital has to be generated through sustainable business models, writes ✍️ Engr. Great article highlighting one of the points that has had a major impact on the deployment of networks across the globe - how Governments 'sell' spectrum to MNOs and the impact this can have on rollouts. We have seen auctions in the past that have raised billions for Government coffers, but that leaves MNOs with major headaches in terms of monetisation as they then must upgrade (or build) masts and networks across the entire country, add new active equipment and provision upgraded backhaul, all of which is expensive, especially when they are in price wars with each other for customers. Renewals of these spectrum allocations will become more and more of an issue as the original licence periods expire, interesting to see how the German regulator is approaching the issue – especially considering their decisions creating new challenger companies when other M&A has taken place which potentially creates more headaches later on. VMO2’s Satellite Strategy: Bridging UK’s Digital Divide Effectively The modern telecommunications landscape is ever-evolving, with mobile services providers persistently innovating and experimenting to optimize connectivity. One noticeable trend in these advancements is the utilization of Starlink’s network of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites for backhaul services. This innovative approach is being adopted by the mobile provider VMO2, which aims to use a constellation of over 5,000 LEO satellites for backhaul communication needs across the UK. Historically, mobile service infrastructure has leaned heavily on fibre optic cables or wireless point-to-point connections for backhaul. This means transmitting data between the cell towers and the network core. However, such traditional means are hardly effective, especially in remote and rugged landscapes like the Scottish Highlands where the cost of deployment is prohibitively high due to geographical challenges. Through the adoption of Starlink’s network of LEO satellites, VMO2 can bypass these hurdles, establishing reliable backhaul connections to remote masts without necessitating expensive terrestrial network infrastructure.
