I had seen clips of when I did the interview with Paul McGregor but not the whole interview. Having just been through their website I can see how fast they have evolved to serve the community. Joao Martins’ workshop on core leadership skills and the empowering panel on advancing women in STEM were truly inspiring. The Transferable Skills Workshop by ICAEW and Personal Branding Session by Charlotte Sangster underscored the importance of teamwork, communication, and personal presence. Day 2 Highlights: Laura Tye’s keynote on resilience and networking resonated deeply, followed by an insightful session with Vicky Stedman from British Airways. At SwitchedON! we do things a little differently… Since we are a global academy all about empowering students, we give them the opportunity to make a positive global impact every time they come to class… What does this mean? At the start of class, students choose the SDG cause that they want to support that day. We currently have four causes that they can choose from, and these change monthly. For example, during June, they could choose to: 🤩 Save a square metre of forest from wildfire 🤩 Give a day of life-saving clean water to a family 🤩 Give a day of medical attention to street dogs Or 🤩 Provide one meal for students This provides a grest opportunity for a short discussion. 🚨 Morning reflections from an inspiring podcast 🚨 Today, I tuned into The Diary Of A CEO with Alok Kanojia MD MPH, and wow—it was packed with insights! I’ll drop the link in the comments for those keen to dive in. A standout point was the idea that talking about your problems doesn’t necessarily solve them. Here’s why: 🔍 Talking reduces negative emotions in the moment, but long-term motivation for change? That comes from those very negative emotions themselves! Emotions—both positive and negative—are signals, guiding us toward growth and change. The key takeaway? We often look externally to solve our problems, when in fact, the root cause is usually internal. Rather than just trying to fix behaviours, like addiction or unhealthy habits, it’s vital to ask, “Why is this happening?” Understanding the cause helps in making real, lasting changes. As allied health professionals, we’re often on the frontline, guiding others through their emotions and challenges, but how often do we stop and reflect on our own? It has been a pleasure to represent #Elrha and the #UKHIH at #HNPW this last week. This year the programme was bigger than ever, and with so much content to engage with, it is an event that is impossible to summarise. Instead, here are some of the key takeaways that stood out for our team: The old (AAP) and the new (AI) dominated the panels. Two subjects reigned supreme across the many panel events we attended. With almost 50 sessions on #AAP, perhaps we are finally reaching a tipping point? The challenge now is clearly not a lack of solutions (of which we saw many), but more the political will to take the learning from the last decade and actually put the best solutions into permanent practice. On the other hand, while it wasn’t a dedicated theme on the agenda, I don’t think there were many panels that did not make some passing reference to #AI. As with all subjects that generate heat, we can expect to see many pilots in the coming years, but perhaps this time we can learn from the past and invest now in our collective learning so that we proactively create the best conditions for the responsible adoption of this new technology. We need to talk about #trust: Perhaps less explicit but nevertheless a subtext to many events was the  concern over declining trust within the system. From the undermining of the international system by the behaviours and actions of powerful governments, to the continued inequities and structural disincentives to partnership and collaboration created by competition and the miss-placed propriety of international actors, there was a sense that at a moment when solidarity and trust is needed more than ever, we are perpetuating a culture that actively works against this. Can #quality make a comeback? There were a number of panels and events that spoke to the importance of quality in humanitarian programming. With the focus on AAP, it has felt that quality has had a low profile in recent years, but this year there was a call to remember that quality and accountability go together, and as such are the means to protecting life with dignity when people are most vulnerable. Persistent budget cuts and resource stretch risk compromising quality. Perhaps we do need new thinking and new models in how we think about and deliver quality services, but we certainly heard a call to action for all of us to put discussions on quality back up the priority list. It’s still early days for humanitarian engagement with the #climatecrisis. The humanitarian sector is increasingly talking about climate, but the conversations continue to feel dominated by questions rather than answers right now. Perhaps the strongest consensus we can find within the wide-ranging discussions is that “local” knowledge will be critical to our understanding of how climate risk intersects with humanitarian needs…lets hope the answers, when we get there will be driven by this knowledge’.

I'm super excited to be a member of the Hatch Enterprise UK City Bridge Foundation accelerator programme that kicked off in September! During Monday’s session, focusing on impact measurement, we got into a discussion about what our overall “impact vision” should be. Facilitator Shehnaaz Latif encouraged us to think big. So — “is this really about the big, impossible goal?”, people asked in the chat. “Isn’t there a world where our businesses won’t be needed, if we achieve that big, impossible goal?” Shehnaaz was clear in explaining that yes, indeed, sometimes the business we set out to create might one day become obsolete. With big social challenges, like homelessness or social isolation, the complex picture makes that unlikely — but at the end of the day, if your mission is achieved, then great — you can hang up your (digital or physical) tools. I’ve talked about this so many times and in so many different situations, and how it’s true for Telescope just as much as any other impact business. The “for impact” guru  Felicia Willow— whose new LinkedIn tagline is “the Mary Poppins of the charity sector” — articulated it really well in a post earlier this year. Explaining her new title, Felicia wrote: “I help charities to function effectively. And, just like Mary Poppins, I expect to not be needed when my work is done”. But what I particularly also appreciated was Felicia’s emphasis that sometimes, this is about “investing to save”. She explains: “I always buy into the cause and want charities to focus their spending on where it will have the most impact. Sometimes, that means spending money on me. Because once my work is done, there should be a lot less spending on anything else needed.” As I’m working to develop new projects and partnerships for Telescope, including launching a new refugee programme, this is a big reality of the day-to-day — my job is about convincing people to spend a little bit of money on me now, in order to save quite a lot of money down the line. It’s not always an easy sell, but there are some ways I’m trying to sweeten the deal — because I truly believe that what we can do for government will help, a great deal, with better outcomes further down the line. So here's a few things I'm doing now: 🥪 I'm offering free "lunch-and-learn" sessions for policy teams or frontline charities about our work and experience ✌ I'm offering a limited number of *free* 1:1 pair programmes, connecting an individual policymaker with an individual frontline worker for a meaningful learning experience 👀 and I have a new new, exciting, and topical resource to share mapping the new government's priorities and key contacts (thank you Georgia Bondy for all your work!). Yesterday I was really pleased to present with my colleague Aminat Raji at a networking event at the Old Bailey, kindly hosted by Bronek Masojada, Sheriff of the City of London, bringing together a wide range of charities and businesses all committed to creating more career opportunities for underserved young Londoners. It was great to be able to share our learning from The Mayor's Fund for London, and I particularly enjoyed presenting alongside Aminat who shared her experience of connecting young people with opportunities, and her own story of progression through a positive work experience placement and to a role where she now supports others to make that journey. There was so much good practice on show from civil society organisations in the room, and it was really good to hear from The Brokerage, City Gateway, Young Westminster Foundation and 2-3 Degrees . There's certainly real scope for us to build even stronger partnerships across civil society organisations who are all working toward similar outcomes. It was also valuable to hear from employers Societe Generale, DWF, HF and Ardonagh Specialty about the range of approaches they take and the way they were challenging themselves to open up opportunities for young Londoners. The room was buzzing with good ideas and organisations keen to connect and Sally Bateson had bought together a really diverse and committed group. There are still too many young Londoners who don't get the opportunities they need - because they haven't the networks or the support - so it's vital that there are more connections made, through schools, community organisations and through outreach, to open doors. It is equally vital that businesses should see that the way to build new talent, bring in new ideas and experience into their organisations is through partnering with organisations who can offer that support and engagement to young people. And it's also so important that young Londoners have a voice in these discussions and can have a say in shaping practice and priorities based on their experience. Looking forward to picking up the conversations - and making sure even more young Londoners can access the opportunities London offers; that London's businesses can be even more open and welcoming to the talent and experience young people bring, so that London - and young Londoners - can thrive.

I'm excited to announce the launch of a new Being Luminary research project looking into Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion across British education globally. This report aims to understand how DEI is conceptualised, implemented, and monitored across different British educational contexts. Formal invitations to participate have been sent to key organisations across the regulatory, awarding and accreditation part of the sector. Their insights into how standards and frameworks support schools in this area will form an important part of building a complete picture of DEI in British education. In other words, please respond!! The research will explore: ✓ Policy effectiveness and strategic planning ✓ Curriculum reform and inclusivity ✓ Staff recruitment, retention, and professional learning ✓ Student, staff, and parent experiences ✓ Implementation successes and challenges ✓ Future developments and opportunities The findings will be published in the Spring of 2025, providing valuable insights for educators, leaders, and policymakers across the sector. Help bridging the funding gap for under-represented founders is massively needed. I thought Innovate UK had started this last year with a tender released to support 300 under-represented founders in a year (with the aim of getting 100 funded). The tender deadlines came and went, and then a bunch of us got invited to a 2 day workshop in London to help narrow the specification (September 23). More tender deadlines subsequently moved. No explanations given, no further info. "The money has been earmarked and has to be spent". Lots of good people dedicated time, effort and good will into the process without even a message to tell us what's happening for nearly a year. Our own consortium (involving Diversity-X and Magic Sauce Online but looking to spread the tender money around other communities and providers) spent weeks preparing an innovative solution. I'd like Clive Lewis as my local MP and Peter Kyle and Rt Hon Rachel Reeves to hopefully shed light on what happened to this program as part of a new government that has said it's prioritising innovation and helping under-represented people in the startup ecosystem.

Is it possible to be a CEO and enjoy a young family at the same time? Thanks to Leaders Plus I've seen that it is. In 2018 I took part in the Leaders Plus programme, an award winning fellowship supporting ambitious parents to pursue their careers while enjoying their young families and it was game changing for my confidence and how I approach both work and home. As a result I've worked 4 days a week/ 0.9 ever since I had my children, giving me precious time with them while not giving up the work I love at Action Tutoring What works? - A great team around you and a clear sense of where you add the most value and your work priorities. You can't do everything and you don't need to. - Not being afraid to put home commitments in your work diary, including pick ups and drop offs, giving transparency about your availability and also normalising it for others to talk about home life at work. - Flexible working, ensuring those precious moments of first concerts, sports days etc aren't missed. - And then when at home, doing your best to be fully present, not scrolling through those work emails during bath time (preaching to myself here!), even if you're logging back on later. Do schools educate or socially condition us? 🤔 How frequently do we actually ask ourselves if we're thinking critically by engaging independent thought based on our interests or are we obeying programmes that we've adopted as routine? Why is there such a disparity between what is taught at Eton and what is taught in state schools? Not why do they have such chasms in budgets but why is the knowledge disseminated completely different? Then the question becomes, if we envisaged our indoctrination (to serve) to be an education worthy of adoption and application, when should we start to address the fact in order to remedy its affects? Malware is a programme that if infecting our PCs is dealt with by applying anti virus. What do we apply to ourselves when malware has come to govern our operating systems? Onfido has grown from a student startup a 500-strong team than £140million of revenue and customers worldwide.  The company has been sold  to Entrust Corp,a global leader in trusted payments, identities and data security. the purchase makes the hugest value return on investment for a student - led start-up for the University of Oxford. I’m privileged to have played an important role as a mentor  in the early days of Husyan’s  most successful journey. (Onfido’s Success) Over the past 12 years the company has developed a cloud-based, AI - powered identity verification technology that helps millions access digital services every week- from billion - dollars institutions to hyper - growth startups across multiple sectors. Millions of customers joining a new digital bank or payments app use Onfido’s technology during the signup process. Even  more greater news that Onfido technology is also used to verify a driving license or passport with a smart phone camera.  My prayers are always with  Husayn for  now and for the future. this shows how hard work pays back ! Luck to me is something else: Hard Work - and realising what is opportunity and what isn’t. Hard work pays off - hard work beats talent any day, but if you’re talented and work hard, it’s hard to be beat. I’m not a believer of luck. I think opportunity and hard work becomes luck.

It was a pleasure to speak today for London Plus at a London Funders briefing on supporting communities affected by racism, Islamophobia and violence. Also sharing insights and information with a large group of Funders were Minnie Rahman of Praxis, for Migrants and Refugees Mudaser A. of Muslim Charities Forum (MCF) and Harbi Jama of London Community Foundation. These are a few of the themes talked about: Safety and security - of staff and premises in the front line of the sort of violent attacks we’ve witnessed Funding approaches - and the need to open up funding to organisations such as Mosques, which have strong community support streams of work Misinformation and language - the powerful impact that naming or omitting to name what is really going on has on trust and relationships The varying levels of preparedness in organisations, and the need for funders to invest in supporting this, and greater security The harm arising from the way in which hostile environment language and policies interact with how those seeking asylum are housed, and where The potency we might have working more closely together with funders on longer term system changing approaches to addressing this and building greater social cohesion
