Yesterday the Labour Party published its plan for Britain's railway. Our response can be read below. "Rail Forum broadly welcomes the publication of Labour's plans for our railways. We see considerable benefits in the unified and simplified governance proposals plus the intent to give the embryonic Great British Railways body the authority to be the directing mind, rather than a centralised government department. We agree with the emphasis on passengers and freight growth and particularly welcome the setting of long-term strategy and infrastructure priorities. "As with everything, the actual benefits of these proposals to passengers, freight organisations and rail supply chain companies will depend on the detail. Rail Forum looks forward to working with any incumbent Government to ensure the continued improvements in our railways." Source apportionment analysis for London’s bus fleet: The Transport for London (TfL) red-liveried bus fleet are part of the city's identity, but were a key area for improvement in the Mayor of London's 2018 Environment Strategy. Southwark Borough Council commissioned CERC consultants to assess the contribution of bus emissions to total pollutant concentrations in Southwark. Using the ADMS-Urban model and emissions inventory tool EMIT, we created air quality maps of the borough for nitrogen dioxide and particulates, based on all emissions and then on bus emissions only. We also modelled pollutant concentrations at a large set of roadside receptors along Southwark's bus routes. We took traffic data from the London Atmospheric Emissions Inventory, using EMIT to create a traffic scenario including only buses. The figure shows source apportionment results for NOx, with concentrations due to bus emissions shown as a proportion of the concentration from all emissions sources. At locations where the modelled annual average NO2 objective is exceeded, buses may contribute to less than 10% of the total NOx, as seen along Old Kent Road. In contrast, at Elephant Square and St. George's Circus, buses can be responsible for over 40% of total NOx. This highlights key areas where improving bus infrastructure would result in tangible improvements to air quality.

Scotland’s Railway has published today its Climate Ready Plan which sets out how the nation’s railways will respond to the challenges of our changing climate over the next five years and beyond. Published jointly by Network Rail Scotland and ScotRail the 109-page plan will inform investment across the railway’s infrastructure during the next five years from April 2024 to March 2029. In total £1.9bn will be invested in renewing the railway’s infrastructure in Scotland over the next five years. More than £400m of this will contribute towards the resilience of the network against extreme weather and future changes in climate – including over £100m on earthworks, £100m on lineside infrastructure including drainage and over £40m on structures like bridges and tunnels. The plan also lays the groundwork for development of a longer-term adaptation strategy for managing the risks associated with changes in Scotland’s climate. Click below to read the full article:

For growth and prosperity to increase, we should be calling on the Bank of England should lower interest rates to attract investors and reduce red tape within the public sector. Empowering local councils to work with the 'most economically advantageous' suppliers for infrastructure projects can accelerate market growth. This is especially crucial now, as local and general elections, along with high interest rates, has led to a cycle of stagnation and investor apathy. The next government should lead implement policy changes to support local councils, who understand the needs of their communities and how to deliver effectively. By providing them with the necessary funding, local councils can collaborate with local suppliers, fostering economic growth and ensuring positive outcomes for their communities. Then again, what do I know? I have only worked with public sector organisations, tier one contractors and consultants in the built environment and infrastructure sectors for thirty plus years providing recruitment services. We must ensure robust plans for a sustainable future across the board. 🚆 Rail: Labour launched the Great British Railways Bill to centralise rail operations under #GreatBritishRailways, a move that presents an opportunity to embed climate responsibility into rail infrastructure planning. Our work indicates that in order to decrease carbon emissions from private car travel, we need to make train travel more attractive, convenient and affordable. 🚇 Exciting Milestone for London Transport!
