🚨 A new report from The Medical Technology Group (MTG) has set out how to end “deeply embedded” variation within the #NHS after research found that patients living just 13 miles apart can be subject to drastically different performing hospitals. 📉 MTG says that freedom of information requests have revealed that limited sharing of best practice between, and within, ICBs means leaders’ ability to manage and cut waiting lists has been limited. NHS England and NICE outline proposals for new pathway to fast-track MedTech. NHS England and the NICE - National Institute for Health and Care Excellence have published a consultation document which sets out proposals for moving towards a more rules-based, integrated, and predictable pathway for the evaluation, funding, and commissioning of medtech in the NHS. NHS patients in England will benefit from faster access to the most innovative and cutting-edge medical technologies under new plans. Proposals set out in a joint NHS England and NICE consultation outline a new route for MedTech developers to access NHS funding to fast-track clinically and cost-effective products for use by the healthcare system. The plans will ensure the growing number of game-changing products recommended by NICE can be introduced to the NHS on a large-scale to improve patient outcomes. The proposals in the consultation document have been developed by NHS England and NICE with input from the Department of Health and Social Care and other partners, including the Office for Life Sciences (OLS) and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). Along with improving outcomes for patients, the proposals in the consultation will provide greater certainty for MedTech innovators and suppliers – with a commitment to automatic funding to support routine commissioning for those technologies that meet a required criteria. All very true - our public engagement work on the Secure Data Environment project, and earlier and current national engagements around commercialisation show that the public have been clear and consistent about their concerns related to commercial access, and, crucially, what would be required to build and maintain trust for commercial access: - Fair and equitable returns (including NHS access to any treatments arising from NHS data) - Meaningful audit and control - Meaningful transparency of findings, regardless of their financial value - Meaningful sanctions for data misuse and/or failure of benefit sharing (incl transparency) To some degree, we have reached the limits of public deliberation and engagement until we have answers to the above challenges - until we can show the public that we have listened to their concerns and requirements for social licence by putting into place the measures they have been asking for, we won't be able to build public trust and acceptability.
