Pension funds enjoy a very material tax exemption privilege. I wonder if some element of that privilege should be linked to commitment to the sector, increased over time to stop a wall of money, where for example a vehicle like Adam proposes and/or direct investment would qualify. Pension funds free not to participate, might have a size threshold, but if they do not they pay some tax. Link that to whatever regulatory tweaks needed to ensure funds are not penalized for investing a portion in growth - rationally 4% has to be a perverse allocation, someone has got the rules wrong. It feels like it is not in their investors' interests, aside from the societal point of the need to support growth, the no.1 claimed objective of the incoming government.

There’s a lot of investor relations officers and companies telling UK issuers that retail investors don’t have an appetite for risk. This is false. They do have an appetite for risk. Especially the digitally active retail investors aged 20-40. The problem isn’t the investors, the problem lays with the companies NOT targeting investors. IROs and IR firms aren’t being honest about this fact because it’s their job to target these investors. No targeting = No retail capital. Simple. If you’re a PLC or a shareholder in a PLC contact the IR team and ask them why they don’t target retaii investors? Scrutinise and question every single they say. #ir #investorrelations #comms #pr

Is it time to ditch your Premium Bonds in the UK? (if you haven't already). Is now the moment to wave goodbye to one of the UK's favourite savings products that might reside in your portfolio? The National Savings and Investments (NSI) has announced that from January, the effective prize rate will drop from 4.15% to 4% as the overall tax-free value of the prize drops. More than 126 Billion GBPs are held in Premium Bonds, but does this capital need to find a new home? Let's be fair, the odds of winning a prize are about 22,000 to 1. Yet, still we flock towards them!! Yes, I know they're guaranteed by The Treasury, but is this enough of a reason to purchase premium bonds? I'm not saying my opinion is fact, but I would love to hear the thoughts of the UK investing public. Is this the beginning of the end for Premium Bonds? Some easy access interest accounts are offering north of 4.85% per annum? Isn't this a better option? What about the FTSE 100 as a buy, hold and dividend payer? Or a surging US stock market? Is there still room in your portfolio for a premium bond? I think it is hard to justify. For anyone who does like 'low cost trackers' let me know. Our most basic strategy on TPP is a slightly leveraged tracker which generates 1.5 x its benchmark (net of costs). We cover the UK stock market, European, US and Asian. Men and Women see the world through a different lens. Linguistic experts have done numerous studies and find that we are socialized from a young age to use language differently and our views of success, leadership and risk are different. Obviously, these are generalizations but if 80% of the FAs in the country our men and 50% of women are feeling patronized by advisors then there certainly seems to be a disconnect. It's not anyone's fault or bad intent, we just need to be aware so we can communicate and build trust easier. Fortune works hard, but finance bros work harder. Two weeks ago, I spent time at Aviva Investors, learning a lot about how to break into the industry. Here are a couple of the key takeaways -no gatekeeping. 1) Spring Weeks start early! 🏞️ BlackRock's Spring Weeks have already opened. Spring Weeks serve as a gateway to learn about the industry and help you land those coveted summer internships. Use Trackr to find out which application processes are open and start applying! 2) Learn as much as you can 👨‍🏫 When applying for Spring Weeks, they're not expecting you to know everything. However, demonstrating a genuine interest in the industry through attending events, learning about software like Aladdin and Preqin, and keeping up with current affairs will set you apart. Spring week prep is serious, and gaining experience now is super beneficial. Learn about the markets and the basics of what you're applying to. You can sign up for Bloomberg's email list and John Authers' "5 Things" to start your day to stay informed. 3) Ask loads of questions 🙋 In an interview, ask as many questions as you can. Think about what information you would need if you were in the interviewer's place to feel comfortable passing you through to the next stage. Keep going until they stop you for time reasons. Also, ask questions about them as a person. Learn about who they are and try to relate to them. Remember, you're assessing the firm just as much as they are assessing you. 4) Looksmaxx your CV 🗽 Polish your CV to perfection. Tailor it to highlight your strengths and experiences relevant to the finance industry. A well-crafted CV can make a significant difference. Think of it as your personal ad – make it shine! 5) Match your personal values & strengths to the role 💪 Align your personal values and strengths with the role you are applying for. This not only makes you a better fit but also ensures you’ll be happier in your job. 6) Join societies 📈 Get involved with finance-related societies at your university. These provide networking opportunities, additional learning, and can make your CV stand out. Plus, it’s a great way to meet like-minded finance enthusiasts. 7) Actually research the role you want to get into 🧑‍🔬 Understand the specific role you’re applying for. Learn the jargon and the skills required. The more knowledgeable you are, the more confident and prepared you’ll be. Think of it as preparing for a first date – you want to know what you're getting into. 8) Understand the firm and what makes them different Research the firm thoroughly. Know their values, their unique selling points, and what makes them stand out in the industry. This will help you tailor your application and demonstrate genuine interest. Breaking into finance is no easy feat, but with preparation, persistence, and a bit of polish, you'll be well on your way. And remember, even if fortune works hard, you can always work harder. Zapaygo is just the latest example of why the UK's Insolvency system is unfit for purpose. Founded by serial failure Elliot Hall, Zapaygo took £500k off Crowdcube investors and £5m off British Business Bank via a Future Fund loan. Various others investors also wasted their cash. From the outset it was clear to anyone with any business sense and experience that this was a joke outfit. Elliot was a joke as was his team of mincers. They had a 'contract' with the NEC Group which if it had been of any commercial value would have let them build their business. But it was mainly smoke and mirrors and never produced a penny. In fact despite the huge valuation given to the company (by Elliot), this risible shambles never turned over more than few pennies. It never functioned and is now in liquidation although as you will see below, even this has been farcical. In January 2023 - so almost 2 years ago, the filing at Companies House stated Order of the Court to wind up. But nothing has happned since. The company has been in limbo for more than 3 years. Elliot Hall who has a lot of questions to answer about where all the cash went, has been let off and is as we write starting up some new nonsense again. The last filed accounts if they are to be believed, showed current creditors of over £10m for a company with a revenue of £24k. Losses for that year were £1.6m and apparently the company employed 14 people. What were they doing? Back when Elliot was taking cash off investors via Crowdcube, we wrote about this company revealing some uncomfortable truths about the NEC 'contract' and the use of passing off by Elliot to fool investors. Elliot set his lawyers onto us very quickly and we were obliged to withdraw our articles and all mention of Elliot and Zapaygo or face legal action. The investment was a success as a result. We were quite sure we were right but the risk was too great at the time. Now it appears that the legal firm was also in on the game; which is worrying! We contacted them but they have refused to comment. It is a huge mess - one that involved millions of pounds and many millions of pounds of UK taxpayers cash. So why is it in limbo? Why isnt Elliot facing charges? Why hasnt he been banned as a Company Director? What the hell is going on? We are told that Elliot has tried to erase this experience from his LI page - you couldnt make it up mate 🤣
