Can England have a National Care Service? The BBC reports that the government’s plans for social care reform in England face an ‘impasse’ as Health and Social Care Secretary, Chancellor and Prime Minister struggle to find the consensus – and perhaps the courage – to embark on reforms that everyone agrees are vital not only to offer millions of people dignity and peace of mind when they have care and support needs, but also to create any kind of sustainable future for councils and the NHS. The problem is that most also agree any meaningful reforms will also be hugely expensive and, on previous experience, unpopular. Labour’s pledge is to create a ‘National Care Service’ which sounds like it might put social care on a similar footing to the National Health Service. The closest we have to a definition of what that means is in their manifesto, and a Labour-aligned Fabian Society’s social care report, both of which stress an NCS will not be a centralised new bureaucracy, but will continue or even strengthen local decision-making in social care, which is currently provided and commissioned in England by councils. Meanwhile, the SNP-led Scottish Government has been trying to implement a National Care Service for three years. Scotland's plans are arguably clearer and built on the back of a number of previous bold national social care reforms. They've also run into signficant opposition and may never come to fruition. So what could a National Care Service look like in England? And what can Westminster learn from Scotland's troubled attempts to implement what's arguably a much clearer, if more controversial plan, for a National Care Service? Thank you Mel for your insightful blog post! We need to ditch the terms "technical" and "non-technical" skills!!! Labeling something by what it isn't fails to capture its critical role, they're essential for patient safety and effective care. I like the term social skills - it is a much more accurate and positive way to describe them. Let's keep working to change this! 😃

I love it when the good guys win. C2-Ai were generating transformative outcomes in healthcare way before the hype around AI. They do this by adjusting for clinical risk at scale, guiding organisations to predict avoidable harm and mortality by intervening early and precisely. Their engine is trained by world-experts on over 500 million patient records from 47 source countries. They are the gold standard. Critically, they have done this globally for years without adding burden to frontline staff or generating friction in workflows. This is aligned with my own work at Vita Healthcare Solutions. Our thesis is that healthcare is fundamentally different to other industries when it comes to scale and adoption. It’s not that scalable health innovation gains adoption. Instead, our thesis is that adoptable health innovation scales (which is also why most health accelerators or investors don’t add value). Part of the problem around the excessive hype in AI today is that we often end up concentrating on exciting early innovation that hasn’t yet fully found its feet. There is a place for that, of course (and some wonderful early-stage firms), but not if it means we overlook the mature innovation that we still so badly need to see reach scale. Most innovation agencies are primarily incentivised to support the continual growth and progress of our early pipeline from ideation to GTM, but there is still a gap in supporting efforts to scale for mature firms. To be clear, if we can’t ensure a firm like C2-Ai scales, something is badly wrong. They’re not alone; Patients Know Best, ORCHA, AdviseInc, Cognitant Group Limited, Cogniss, Axela, Written Medicine, CyberLiver Limited, PatientSource, Medefer, Cyted Health, Surgery Hero, C the Signs, inicio health, Doc Abode , iBox Healthcare, FITFILE, ImproveWell, Inavya Ventures Ltd., Patchwork Health, Vivan Therapeutics, Inovia Bio, Feedback Medical, MediShout, Pangaea Data, Newton's Tree, Stress Point Health, Lenus Health, Arcturis, uMotif, syd™, IgniteData, Visionable Global and a few dozen more firms (sorry if I missed you out) should all be supported to scale nationally and internationally. I’ve advocated for C2-Ai for a while. During the height of the Covid pandemic, I produced a list of 10 essential UK innovations for a pandemic response on LinkedIn and they made it in easily. When I later produced the First 100 Export Playbook for Digital Health for the Department for Business and Trade (then the DIT), I scored the innovators formally in private, and C2-Ai were the highest ranked by some distance. If you want to protect patients in your facility, region or country from avoidable harm, or want to finally invest in a digital health firm with a huge but realistic TAM-SAM-SOM there are few actions that feel as obvious or as necessary as engaging with C2-Ai.

Lots of opinons and analysis of the Darzi report being shared. It is great to see people interested in both the current state assessment but also the huge opportunities outlined for us to transform our NHS for the better. After some time working alongside NHS leaders on digital transformation initiatives, I've seen firsthand how technology can drive positive change in our healthcare system. The Darzi Review reinforces many of the priorities I've observed as critical: 1️⃣ Balanced digital investment across all care settings, particularly in primary care, community services, and mental health where underinvestment has been chronic 2️⃣ Leveraging data analytics for population health insights and comprehensive performance measurement across all services, not just hospitals 3️⃣ Accelerating adoption of patient-facing digital tools like the NHS App to improve access, communication, and engagement 4️⃣ Implementing interoperable shared care records to enable truly integrated care and support multidisciplinary teams 5️⃣ Exploring innovative technologies like AI, remote monitoring, and virtual wards to shift more care into community settings and improve efficiency 6️⃣ Focusing on change management and staff engagement to drive adoption and realise benefits of new technologies 7️⃣ Using technology to empower patients, giving them more control over their care and health data 8️⃣ Collaborating across organisational boundaries on digital initiatives to reduce duplication and fragmentation 9️⃣ Prioritising cybersecurity and data protection as digital capabilities expand 🔟 Aligning all digital transformation efforts with broader strategic priorities, especially integrated care and moving services closer to home In my experience, success comes when we view digital not as an IT project, but as a key enabler of system-wide transformation. It's about using technology to improve care quality, accessibility, and efficiency across the entire health and care landscape. I'm always eager to discuss how we can tackle these priorities and support our NHS colleagues in this crucial work. Gen Ai in action and delivering benefits to the NHS. I can’t tell you how pleased I am to see this case study published. If you’re looking to make you board secretariat processes more efficient, drop me a message for a chat. (Or continue to do it the slow way if you prefer) On a more strategic front, this is actually a much more interesting tool than ‘just’ board minutes. In fact it’s a secure Gen Ai platform which allows you to save your most frequent or complex prompts. What a great time to be working in data-driven research and innovation. We’ve made huge strides with the NHS England Data for R&D, transforming a bewildering process for researchers seeking to access data - which of the 7000+ potential starting points should I choose? - to a single, structured process that will be delivered through the NHS Research SDE Network. All set within a consistent approach to Information Governance and a robust framework for involvement and engagement with Patients, Publics and Professionals. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be announcing our Network Driver Projects - our exemplars of delivering data-driven insights at pace and scale to deliver improvements to patient outcomes and system performance. But, the really exciting things will happen when we harness data from right across the public services to understand the impact of social and economic factors on health outcomes. The Connected Bradford research database is an excelllent example of what’s to come (link in comments).

Fantastic to be at the VODG (Voluntary Organisations Disability Group) AGM at the House of Lords today, and the launch of an exciting research project and call to action on Collaborative Commissioning. Also great to catch up with Lord Victor Adebowale CBE to talk about putting resources and creativity in the right place to enable more people with Learning Disability and Austistic People to leave hospital. We agreed that evidencing the acute failures of young autistic people with mental health needs stuck in inappropriate provision is critical. Enabling person-centred solutions as early as possible saves so much public money over a course of a life, let alone the priceless human potential that is lost if this does not happen. It may seem expensive in the short term but investment in early solutions alongside people and families, by third sector providers such as Active Prospects UK delivers life changing results and savings.

I will be joining a panel to discuss the importance of citizen engagement in designing and delivering transformative change.
